A Long Walk in England's Smallest County.

On Monday I did a complete circuit of Rutland water on foot starting from Oakham Station. Well I have to get out when its sunny or I never will. It'll probably soon be raining again. It seems to be getting harder to walk longer distances like this but it was also quite warm and I felt pretty much knackered by the time I went home after approx 6 hours.
This is Oakham where I began.

Rutland water used to be Europe's biggest man made lake. Several places were flooded to build it but this church was left from the village of Normanton sticking out into the lake.

There's lots of sailing and watersports taking part here.

These were just about the cutest lambs I have ever seen and I wanted to take one home.I think they are Hibernian sheep. This one was almost in a trance.

Its surrounded by several nice villages and also a nature reserve. The ospreys have just returned from Africa and although I saw its nest unfortunately I did not see an adult bird.

An interesting cottage back in Oakham. It once belonged to Jeffrey Hudson (1619 – circa 1682) who was an English court dwarf at the court of Queen Henrietta Maria. He was famous as the "Queen's dwarf" and "Lord Minimus", and was considered one of the "wonders of the age."

Thanks for comments, It would have been better in cooler conditions I think.(mustn't grumble it was sunny!)
Rachel, you can walk or cycle around the whole reservoir nowadays. There is a cycle hire place at two of the visitor centres and I think a bus if you arrive by train takes you direct from Oakham to the car park next to the cycle hire at Whitwell.Posted 22nd May 2014 at 12:41 by indigo777 -
