Sanctuary

Posted 13th May 2014 at 17:14 by indigo777

The garden has been quite neglected over the last couple of years. Looking after my mother as she slowly died took priority. I have tried to start the long task of tidying it up and replanting. Its not a garden for food although I used to grow tomatoes in the greenhouse and there are a couple of apple trees. It was always intended as a wildlife friendly garden. A small oasis in the heart of the city.

The pond which I built myself many years ago.It quickly attracted frogs and dragonflies. I also have a newt(called Nigel) and 2 fish, one of them is 20 years old this June.

Yesterday from the same angle. The white fluffy thing is the cat from next door. She drinks out of the pond but is far too fat and lazy to hunt.

I am also growing some seeds, all flowers to attract insects. There are so many slugs and snails here that many types of plants will simply not survive so its a matter of pot luck and finding out what is most resistant.

There is something particularly satisfying to see dragonflies emerge from my own pond after living as larva for 3 years and take off on a summers evening. This is the empty skin case after one has already flown off.

Some mating frogs. It took several years to get my first frogspawn.I used to raise a ball or 2 each year and feed them fish food to increase their numbers as I hoped they would help eat slugs and snails. They dont,I have more slugs and snails then ever!

What a lovely garden, looks to be a peaceful haven and full of life. The garden here is out of control, though our Earthly Mother is clearly in charge and has a grand plan. We have frogs too, don't they go crazy when they mate?! One of the early signs of spring for me. Having dragonflies is magical. Those tender plants look resilient so far, hope that is a success

    Thanks rainbow,
I should not really have raised more frogs. I went from just the 2 to about 120 in the pond with 2 years. When it rains they often come hopping down to the house!
