I've accepted that as a gay you just have to be better than the straights so I can't be surprised things have turned out so badly. It is annoying to be hamstrung by social anxiety as a result though, because that's hardly starting off on the right foot. It's hard enough for normals to get everything sorted these days. (The ageing population, the increasing rentseeking behaviour from both left and right etc etc.) I didn't do everything I could to fight through the anxiety either.
