Mood
Lonely

Default Hi (finally)

Hi all

I'm jamie, 44 yo bloke from midlands..
I've been battling with a mix of depression and SA for a while (last 12 months since i acknowledged that was what was going on vs just denial and suffering in silence)

My main issues are that of low mood (obv) and i'm starting to think the SA is rooted in shame

What's hurting me most is that i seem to enjoy nothing anymore ... i obtain no satisfaction, pleasure, sense of achievement in anything anymore..

I just seem to exist and go through motions...

This year i finally started to lose some weight (been big all my life) and have lost 20% of my body weight this year so far and people are saying how well i'm doing and how much better i look, my clothes feel looser and i have more energy again... people keep saying how proud i must feel .... and i don't ... i just feel how much i could be doing better... that i should have done better and am failing at it

I was prescribed prozac a couple months ago to 'help' but i decided against them on the basis that the side effects (researched a lot) terrified me.... i use 5htp as a supplement (off and on) and find that helps with sleep a bit (insomnia is another side issue)

Long 'hi' post i know but thought i'd lay it all out
Would love to cultivate some friendships / support on here
Thanks
J

Hello Jamie!

It might take time but I hope this forum and the people here can help you in some way, especially if it helps you feel better and allows you to appreciate the good you're managing currently, like your weight loss

Welcome to the forum!

Hi, welcome to the site.

Yeah Prozac can help if you are severely depressed, I know for me they were a life saver. They helped me realise I was ill... it's hard to see things clearly when you are in such a bad mood.

Hey Welcome to the forum.

I tried 5htp but I couldn't afford to carry on with it. I'm on antidepressants now instead (never take both!) they aren't for everyone though.
Hope this place helps you

Welcome to the forum.

I used to use 5htp myself as well. Mixed with chocolate drink initially but it would tend to wake me up half hour later with an upset stomach so I ended up insufflating (snorting) it instead.

It really did help me sleep, I think it depends on exactly why your serotonin levels may be low, it isnt always due to lack of precursors.

As clementine says though NEVER mix it with SSRIs, serotonin overload is a really horrible thing.

Oh, and all the cool cats are 44
