Default Seriously depressed.

I thought I could handle bouts of depression that come around from time to time. And if I'm pursuing some end and keeping busy I can. But if not things can fuck with me and I start getting anxious. I'm sure it's situational more than anything but one situation is taking forever to resolve. To people who have been in that situation would you recommend meds to get out of it? Every 5-6 months I'll go to the doc to get some but I still have an unfulfilled prescription from months ago, which means I never take them for that long at all.

Have they helped others? Would you recommend them? Thanks.

Yes.

They pretty much saved my life.

Give them a go, it's worth a try.

Hi Underground,
I think sometimes meds can definitely help but the problem is finding one that suits. Cipramil was the only one that suited me but I know some other people didn't get on well with it. If it is situational rather than an imbalanced feeling in yourself maybe some counselling might help. I hope you find things easier soon. Obviously where possible I would say to try other options but I think if someone is at the stage where they feel out of control or suicidal I wouldn't question it, though as I said the problem is getting the one that works for you. Take care of yourself.(sorry that sounds inadequate but I mean it).

Thanks for the advice guys.

terminal, i'm glad they turned things around for you. What meds were they?

Thanks Willow. That didn't sound inadequate. That's great advice. I'm not at an emergency stage anyway

You're right Maestro. I just have to do that. Getting some decent sleep would help too.

Though I have conflicting opinions of the drug, I have to say that Prozac helped me massively when I was undergoing a serious, six month long period of suicidal depression. Yeah, they were essential, and worked brilliantly. No more suicidal ideation after a week on them, I could start to focus on my life and felt a renewed sense of optimism, it was like some horrible, shabby curtains had been pulled back.

But, as I always say, if you're gonna go on these pills, and you get to the point where you want to stop taking them, withdraw from them v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y. I didn't, and went nuts!!

Meds have def helped me these past few weeks, also writing things down seems to help too, sort of unburdens you.

Even just random writings helps youd be surprised what you can write sometimes.

i wrote this yesterday

Catch A Thought !

First poem i have wrote in a while, for all my brothers and sisters x

Catch a thought, only for a moment
Then let it go, good or bad
For we are free to wander this land
Experience the light in all its beauty
For darkness must fall sometimes
And Winter can be cold and bleak
But the Springtime brings new life
And colours change in the glorious light
With clear blue skies
And Summer beckons with a glorious warmth.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't know you could still get Prozac? I must remember that if I do go on them for a length of time not to withdrawal to quickly as I have a tendency to do that. It's good to know they have helped people.

That's a brilliant poem Rayman, thanks for posting. It's made me feel better about things. It's a very positive one

You're welcome Willow.

Thanks all.

I waited until I was at the point of despair before taking meds. Now I am not at a point of despair but I am sure they help prevent me getting to that point again. (Citalopram)

Same here. I'm on Sertraline. They stop me tipping over the edge into a pit of despair.

I've been on fluoxetine and citalopram. Did nothing. I'm currently on Venlafaxine which may be working, but its difficult to tell. You might as well give the meds a go again (and ssri's take quite a while to act so you should finish the prescribed amount). Depression really sux.

Well I've been on Prozac for around a year now.

I felt when first got accustomed to them that my mind was sort of insulated from 'thinking' too much, like a sort of psychotic cotton wool.

So for a while they are a good respite from the chaos, but after a while you may start to feel too far removed from reality.

That's the way i feel now and they make me quite lethargic too, i'm just not getting anything done.

So it's time i came off them for real, sanity be damned i need to feel something again
