Default Social anxiety and social mistakes study - your help needed!

Hi
Would you like to take part in my online study? It's about social anxiety and how people with and without social anxiety perceive social mistakes. It could help psychologists to help people with social anxiety more effectively. You also have a chance to win a £20 Amazon gift voucher.

The study requires adults with all levels of social anxiety, but people with high social anxiety are particulalry important. The study is open to anyone above the age of 18.

Taking part involves answering multiple choice questions online about your mood and about some difficult situations. It should take about 20 minutes. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the lead researcher, Chris Lavender (Trainee Clinical Psychologist) at claven@essex.ac.uk or respond to this thread.

For a chance to win the £20 Amazon gift voucher, follow the instructions at the end of the questions. You will only be contacted if you win the voucher.

The study has been ethically approved by the University of Essex. Follow the link below to find out more and to take part:

https://moodle.essex.ac.uk/mod/feedb....php?id=131121

Thank you

Chris Lavender

I started to do this but got frustrated by the lack of options for the answers. Some questions were asking about levels of anxiety over the past two weeks, but there was no option between 'not at all' and 'several days'. That's quite a big jump.

Sorry to hear you were frustrated by some of the questions Aelwyn. I suppose it is a slightly odd set of options. It's difficult to know how to respond if you have felt something one day for the last 2 weeks. I haven't got a great answer for you, but I have had to phrase it that way because it is a standardised questionnaire, and it is used in similar studies. Sorry!

Thank you for your reply, Claven.

I'm sorry you were obliged to stick to that standardised questoinnaire, I imagine it could distort the findings.

I've just filled it in. I found it difficult answering quite a lot, as I wouldn't count a lot of them as mistakes, and I'd be more annoyed than ashamed. Mistakes aren't the main problem I have with SA, so that made it more difficult, but I hope the data is useful.

Thank you Rockford, for doing it and for your feedback.

We thought a lot at the beginning about annoyance and frustration as compared to more social feelings such as shame. It was one of the tricky aspects of having social and non-social situations: non-social situations don't cause social emotions! I can't say much more on this thread because I don't want to influence other people's responses in any way but all feedback is recorded and considered in the final write up.

101 people have now participated!

It was an interesting questionnaire. Although the first two pages for depression/anxiety really do feel like very generic questions, I've always found them odd for gauging a persons depression or anxiety level.

I'm wondering why you asked about what we think of other peoples reactions to an event? Are you trying to gauge if people with SA have different reactions themselves to how they would expect other people to react? E.g. I may react extremely to giving a speech whereby someone without anxiety would react positively? I found that type of question too generic since each person is different, friend A may react very different from friend B.

Thank you for participating and giving feedback. I can’t say too much about the specific aims of the study.

I agree with your comments about imagining others. Everybody is different. The ideal solution for next time might be to show a video of a real other person in a situation, which would also be interesting for participants. What do you think?

That could work quite well since many people's SA will move towards typecasting people, perhaps show different people in the same situation and ask how we think they'd react? I imagine the reactions will be quite different since many SA sufferers say their SA is more intensive either based on a persons age, gender or authority (a manager, a parent etc).

Yes it makes me wonder what sort of person people imagine in the questions.

Filled out the questionnaire a few days ago, hope you got it? I was imagining people in my own peer group in the questions. I agree, it's best not to influence this particular study so I won't give feedback here, but feel free to message me :-)

I filled it in. The first couple of pages look the same as a form I used to fill in before every CBT session, it is amazing how my answers have changed for the positive, even months since my last session of therapy. I'm actually quite shocked and must be doing pretty well in my recovery.
