Conkers

This kids face says it all really:

We had a huge conker tree near us; up against the army barracks wall. When we'd got as many from the outside of the wall as we could, we'd shimmy up between the tree and the wall and drop down the other side to get more.
Got caught once by the squaddies who were very serious about it, but we didn't take any notice of that obviously.

The tree has been cut down now and razorwire put on the top of the wall. I dont think it was because of us though

Everyone knew that if you soak your conkers in vinegar, then cooked them at gas mark 2 for 54.435 minutes, they'd come out rock hard and no one would ever beat you.

Cheesecutters...

Do kids play conkers still?

You sound awfully posh Eid - just muffins and toast with lashings of butter (if we could afford it). I know, bring out the violins. Mind you, the chestnuts and marshmallows sound delicious.

Does anyone know the name of the old ink copier that you had to turn by hand, which was always breaking down and made your filthy in the bargain? Mind you, today's photocopies aren't a lot better.

Best

Theo

Butter? Couldn't afford butter in my house. Margarine we had, if we were lucky. Sometimes we had to use axle grease!

But we were happy in those days!

It doesn't actually kill the tree, just makes the leaves go brown. It's caused by a moth and the pupae overwinter in the fallen leaves. So collecting the leaves and burning them is quite a good way to control them.

I remember playing outside all day, you don't get that these days.

I remember changing from black and white to colour television.

I remember bus conductors! And the buses with the open door and stairs at the back that you jumped on and off, they were great!

I remember intervals at the cinema and the lady who used to stand at the front with drinks and sweets.

I'm glad i lived in my time.
Me too. Some nice memories there.

I remember seeing a pantry round someone else's house. I found it very mysterious for some reason.

Coincidentally, we were watching the new Sherlock Holmes movie yesterday and there was an old train with those compartments. Got us talking about holidays in the past

Great phone! I used to have one that resembled a brick. I used to imagine being on a spaceship with it.

Usually lard. It was quite sort after in those days. We still ignorant as to dangers in these foods.

I, too, loved the steam trains. My father was a signalman and I was so so proud. The power of those enormous engines, being lost in in swirling smoke and finding the right compartment - that wasn't first class. The smell, the excitement cannot be replaced by modern day trains.

I also remember that from a young age I was allowed to wander with others over fields and our parents had no need to worry. In those days, the summers always seemed a magificent blue and gold.

Tin baths anyone - or has that been done?

Health and Safety has gone too far: the joys of conker hitting has been killed by those ridiculous goggles, which as been mentioned I know.

Stink Bombs

I remember letting one of these off in the local sweet shop. There was a person in front of me and I got the timing wrong, so I had to stand there with them gagging but trying not to laugh. I dont know how I managed to hold it in but I got away with it

Haven't smelt one of these in years. I would have thought kids would be letting them off all over the place. Might get some for my next visit to the job centre.

God did they stink!

Girls World - horrible things! Don't know why I ever wanted one, can't remember playing with it much, but I do remember being fascinated in a horribly gruesome way by the pony tail thing that retracted back into the head.

Servis Twintub - more fun than a Girls World! I loved watching this thing work, hours of entertainment!

The 'Whisper Down the Wind' look was just as I was dressed: long socks, belted mac and laced-up Clarkes shoes, none of your designer stuff.

Pam Ayres used to bathed in the kitchen sink, I believe.

Hope I've got the hang of this multi-quote thing - first time I've had a go. NO!

Make sure you get it done at a dentist who knows how it should be done and has the right equipment, as taking them out is meant to be quite dangerous. You dont want to be swallowing/breathing in any of that stuff.

I had mine replaced a few years ago. Can't say I feel any different honestly, but I'm glad my mouth isn't full of toxic metal anymore.
