I'm sorry but this doesn't really bear out when you look at the scene right now. It's global, bigger than it's ever been. Sure there are the big commerical records but there are literally thousands of other producers out there with an infinite array of sounds that exist as part of dnb. When you look at the good ol' days there really wasn't much if any variety, no where near in fact which makes sense since DnB was really pretty small and niche. And if you like the pre-98 or any era sound you can find producers who make it now, which really proves the point, there is far more variety these days. If you want heavy beat laden clattering amen breaks you can have it. If you're looking for bukem-esque intelligent dnb you can find it. There is so much out there it's ridiculous.

^ Some ppl have said dnb is dead before, I don't really believe them but then also don't check out much modern dnb tbh. Although I would agree that 90s dnb includes lots of songs that might sound similar it also sounds like a time dnb was experimental, especially with the beats/breaks, I haven't made music lol.

Would you say bass music would become more of bass music in the future and less of dnb, dubstep, garage etc.

I know that there is non-shit dnb still being produced (most of the dnb I listen to is new-ish, at least the drumfunk type stuff), but it's still a minority, and the majority of that minority is just emulations/continuations of older sounds (maybe with some elements exaggerated, played down, etc, to create new sub-sub-sub-genres). A couple of handfuls of good labels is probably a bit more like it, but that's still nothing compared to all of the shitty BOOM TSH BOOMTSH noise out there.

It's a bit like how fusion was bastardised into smooth jazz – the radio-friendly aspects of fusion were distilled and combined with the generic radio music of the time to create a new and highly shitty genre, and it became so much more popular than fusion that the average dumb masses just assumed that it was fusion. People were still making proper fusion even at the peak of smooth jazz, but they were mostly just copying the stuff from the 70s (or playing in new incarnations of the groups from the 70s), and the fusion fans were happy to continue listening to it as-is just because it was real fusion and not smooth jazz.

Modern dnb (as in that characteristic ‘OMGZ HYPERCHARGED’-yet-ultra-clinical boringmode sound that most 2000s/2010s dnb has – even the less commercial stuff) is to proper dnb (as in jungle and its derivatives that are still recognisable as such, with proper breaks, etc) as smooth jazz is to fusion.

I can't see how they say it is dead when there are always at least two or three dnb singles in the top forty at any one time.

I think it's getting increasingly difficult to categorize some bass music these days when producers are making tracks with so many influences, is it juke, techno, trap or dubstep? What would classically be called pure dubstep has pretty much been reduced to a handful of labels in the UK.

Guys that were making dubstep tracks have veered off into deep house, tech house, electro, glitch, IDM, UK funky, future garage, trap, juke, crunkwave or elements of any and all of the former still with elements of dubstep!

^Tbh I feel the ppl that say dnb is dead are probably the ppl that only listen to old music and say new music is not as good.

This song sounds so smooth and has garage vibes, but then most smooth, deep 90s dnb I listen to seems to have a bit of the garage vibe to me at least

Not really dubstep, more like hiphop.

^I like the grimeness of the chord lol. I don't listen to much grime, I know I probably hace a false image of it though as I listened to abit of jme and ghetts back in high school as some classmates talked about them.

Isn't half time dnb like drumstep? Nice 2nd link

Yeah you're right, it's drumstep. Tempo is a bit slow though. Lots of stuff coming out at more of a jungly 160bpm.

Grimes a mixed ol' bag. Some stuff you can say is categorically 'grime' eskibeat, some like that was dubstep. Other stuff is trap based like Faze Miyake and Preditah stuff.

just bought this for a quid, one of the best breakcore lps i've heard recently;

"machine girl - wlfgrl"

its kind of intense, so may not be everyone's taste.

Wasn't so keen on the actress lp, dissapointed as I've liked his previous solo work and with Boddica but I like the Machine girl track so I bought it. When it's a quid for an album in FLAC format I don't even have to consider whether I'm going to fork out for it. Bandcamp is a great concept. I'm fed up with overpriced rubbish on Amazon that isn't even available in FLAC format! I'd much rather give the money direct to the artist.

More garage but that thread is pretty dead. It's got Van Damme, it's got bass what's not to like?
