Re: What lessons has life taught you?
When I was 20, I was already feeling sad about being "old". I was no longer in my teens, I was out of school, I had a full time job, so in my head I was "past it".
Of course, when I turned 30 I looked back on my 20 year old self and was kicking him for being so short sighted. How could he not realise I was so young when he was 20! So much life ahead of me! My youth! Wasted time. But of course, now I'm 30 I'm definitely justified in feeling old and past it and, oh well, may as well give up now and settle for a life of old man things. I'm now approaching 40 and kicking my 30 year old self for feeling that way. But of course, now I'm justified in feeling old and past it and yadda yadda yadda... My lesson learnt is that although it's easier said than done - and probably a lot harder for most of us on here due to SA and other conditions - try and not waste time feeling old and past it*, as you end up looking back and kicking yourself. Of course, I'm a big hypocrite as I'm still not doing anything about it *Obviously I am speaking generally here, as there will be some things that get locked off from you after you pass a certain age - technically it's too late for me to start trying to become a professional footballer at this age, as an example. |

Re: What lessons has life taught you?
^ Good post! I never felt that I was "past it" at any stage (although I, too, missed out on a glittering career as an international footballer) but there were so many times when I resigned myself to never being able to have a social life. For me, everything changed in my 50s and although everything hasn't suddenly become wonderful, I am now living something approaching my best life.
There really is no point in looking back and worrying what you could / should have done and lamenting the "wasted" years, it never is too late to start building a new life, which may not be the one you idealised in your teens, 20s or whenever, but which is an improvement on what you have now. Nothing changes overnight, but every small step towards the life you want is a small step away from the life which made you unhappy. |

Re: What lessons has life taught you?
Thank you And yeah, you're right. Looking back and lamenting times past isn't going to achieve anything. I mean I do still do it at times when I feel low, but I try and not make it something that dictates my day to day life, as otherwise you just spend the time looking back and never sorting things in the here and now.
Good post from you too Small changes, step by step |

Re: What lessons has life taught you?
That's it's a journey and it does not matter what route you take to get there.
I'm getting better with age as I try to manage better with my social anxiety rather than let it completely ruin things for me. Although, it's still trying at times due to the persistent occasional doubts I have about myself. I managed to pass my driving test just before the lock down come into place so it's like a piece of the jigsaw completed. I've other things that I want to do both in employment, education and life in general. At times it's my perception of myself that's the issue rather than what other parties are doing now. I tend to stay away from people that are not good for me mentally but that's only possible with age and experience. It's the avoidant personality aspects of my social anxiety that cause my issues with sometimes doubting my self worth. Like most boys I wanted to be a professional footballer but it was not social anxiety that prevented that but "two left feet". |

^ If you can play on the left, we'll find you an English grandparent! The same applies in Scotland, to be fair - it seems only Welsh players are left-footed.

Re: What lessons has life taught you?
Yeah.
With Scotland it's Andy Robertson, on potential Billy Gilmour and 9 Mugs The England national side would have taken Gareth Bale/Ryan Giggs in a heartbeat. I don't hate the English national team it's the press I'm not fond of. |

Re: What lessons has life taught you?
Should trust my judgement more the first time.
Talk is cheap. Never use glitter in hair or on body unless willing to spend 3 days scrubbing it out/off and happy to lose a layer of skin in the process (thank you 1980s for this gem). Everyone leaves, so one way or another you'd better try to be ok with you (working on this one still). Everything ends (both blessing and curse). |
