Many people at some point need to claim benefits due to being out of work or having a long term mental illness, mental health problems or disability affecting their ability to work.

There are three main disability benefits.

Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) is for people who are unable to work or have limited capability to work due to long term illness or disability.

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is available to both people who work and people who don't and it is not means tested. It is to support people with the extra costs and restrictions of having a disability or long term illness.

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is for those under 16 for long term illness or disability and is also not means tested. It can be claimed by a parent or carer on behalf of a child.
