SAUK is an online support network for people suffering with social anxieties. It is a place for you to seek support, share experiences and look for advice on feelings of social unease, fear and anxiety. Though there are psychiatric labels for these difficulties, in a more general sense SAUK is set up for people who have at times experienced any form of distress or anxiety when in the company of other people. In keeping with that, any advice given here is always as fellow sufferers - we are lay-persons who are not expressing expert medical or psychiatric opinion. Having said that, writing about and sharing experiences on SAUK can still be very valuable indeed, though should not be at the expense of contacting the appropriate public health services for expert help, support, advice and assistance.

To facilitate the sharing of experiences, we ask that all discussion board members help to create an atmosphere where it feels safe for people to do so. This requires all users to practice being respectful, tolerant, open and accepting of other forum members. For further information on how to use the discussion board please also consult the FAQ.

Suicidal thoughts and feelings

Feeling suicidal, though very painful and distressing, is not uncommon. Indeed, on occasion, discussion board members may feel the urge to voice feelings of hopelessness or despair. However, there is a difference between suicidal thoughts and suicidal actions. With this in mind, whilst forum members may want to share their feelings and thoughts on these and other similar matters, they are NOT encouraged to act upon self-harming behaviours with suicidal intent. Moreover, forum members should NOT use the discussion board to make suicidal threats or gestures. These threats can rarely be followed up, as we are in no position to pass on personal details to the emergency services. This can leave fellow users very anxious and concerned about the well-being of others, and undermines the safe atmosphere of the board.

It is important to remember that we encourage talking, writing about and expressing your difficulties. This is in order to help members put these difficulties into words, rather than making threats or acting on these impulses. If you do feel that you are going to act upon suicidal feelings, please consult the Contacts & Supports section below.

Contacts & Supports

It is important to look for help from a variety of sources if you are feeling suicidal. With this in mind, the following links and contacts can be of help and should be consulted if you are feeling suicidal.

In emergency crisis: If you are actively suicidal we ask that you consider contacting the following:
  • Emergency Services on 999 or go to your local A+E department
  • Your GP, an out-of-hours Doctor or phoning a local hospital (Note: most NHS Doctors will have access to a Crisis Response service in your area. Crisis Response is a specialist NHS mental health service that is set up to help people who are feeling actively suicidal)
For emergency support: If you are struggling with feelings of suicide and wish to express these, we suggest you also consider the following:
  • The Samaritans: 116 123 (freephone) or email jo@samaritans.org. Samaritans also offer a Welsh language line (Llinell Cymraeg) 7 - 11pm, seven days a week: 0808 164 0123
  • Papyrus: For people under 35 - Call 0800 068 41 41 – 9am to midnight every day, text 07860 039967 or email pat@papyrus-uk.org.
  • Childline: 0800 1111 (a free helpline for children and young people in the UK. The call is free and the number will not show up on your phone bill.)
  • Befrienders: Providing confidential support to people in emotional crisis or distress, or those close to them.

Other Supports:

Talk to someone you trust about how you feel. If you do not want to speak to someone via a helpline, you could also contact:
  • A member of your family, a friend or someone you trust like a teacher
  • Your GP, a mental health professional or other health care professional
  • A minister, religious leader or someone in your community
  • Call 111 out of hours
Message a text line - If you do not want to talk to someone over the phone, these text lines are open 24 hours a day, every day:Talking to someone can help you see beyond feelings of loneliness or despair and help you to realise that there are other options open to you apart from ending your life. Whoever you talk to now, you should also visit your GP. They will be able to advise you on treatment options, should these feelings continue to trouble you.
