When Big Brother was on, I wondered if TV could get any worse.
Then Kerry Katona, Katie Price, Peter Andre all got tv shows, I wondered if TV could get any worse
But then TOWIE came on, I wondered if TV could get any worse.
But then Made in Chelsea came on, I wondered if TV could get any worse......
I'm very scared for the future of television.

I've not seen this, but if it's even worse than The Only Way Is Essex then I really do despair.

I'm beginning to think this is all a government plot to dumb down the public to such an extent that we stop caring about the real issues in life and become cabbages, sat in front of our tv watching programmes that are designed to slowly turn the human brain into blancmange.

There's a programme on BBC3 at the moment called 'Young, Rich and Househunting' or something like that. Just looking at the title was enough to put me off watching it for life.

as for made in chelsea i didnt think much of it really.
as for the only way is essex i think that is a kinda marmite kind of show. most people either love it or hate it. i was speaking to a girl a few weeks ago who said she absolutely loved the show, i was a little shocked over her passion for it.

Yeah i thought they were all pretty vile and disgusting tbh, especially the way they talked about pulling, at least in Jersey they aren't so vile about it, there funny about it.

Towie and Jersey both have very likeable people, which makes it fun to watch but this i was just cringing all the way through.

I think this is what puts ppl off. The other similar shows like Jersey Shore they aren't posh and us Brits don't really like seeing posh rich kids ponce about.

I've watched all those episodes. It's quite scary really how some people are. It's basically a ton of young posh people who inherited money from their parents are given budgets of 500k or 1 million to go and find a house. Honestly makes me sick. Their attitude. There's these 2 guys who have a maid in the house. This is why I don't like middle class .. it's not so much their money but their attitudes. Why would you want a maid? The kids on the show are on another planet.

I actually found myself watching the only way is essex, there was something that had me hooked.

I tried watching made in chelsea yesterday, I managed about 20minutes before I had to turn over.

The people on the show just make you want to hit them in the face.....

I believe the following has happenend to television. Obviously now we have digital platforms and hundreds of channels. Going back twenty/twenty five years ago you had your bog standard four channels. The remit for the public broadcaster was to provide current affairs information and cultural services with entertainment being only a part of the equation. Fastworward to the current situation and cultural programmes have been increasingly marginalised to BBC2 and freeview channels, with an increasing and unapologetic trend toward chasing viewing figures on the flagship channel (BBC1). So its as if the obligation to deliver education to the masses has been dropped. I'm increasingly drawn to the conclusion that as a medium that's what television is all about, escapism. Taking in information passively or not engaging the brain at all. Perhaps it reflects a societal trend for dumbing down in all spheres of life. TV executives have given up and are now bowing to the inevitable that you have to air sensationalist crap in order to draw in the figures. I can understand why private channels do this. Their only obligation is to raise advertising revenue and profits to shareholders, but BBC executives are pretty much doing the same thing chasing that all elusive viewing share.

I agree with what you're saying here but it seems the vast majority of current television is based on the same vain hope that sticking a camera in front of someone and asking them to get on with their lives will produce something mildly entertaining. We all have our different tastes but I miss the days of variety, comedy, entertainment and drama etc. All that has happened is that having lots of channels has diluted the creative input. In my opinion of course.
