As an amateur historian I love Tudor portraits. There's so much more than meets the eye. Most people think it's just a painting of a monarch/person and little else. But all the things in the background mean something, either in antiquity or christianity. Symbolisism is fun!

Holbein:

A self portrait. All the "clutter" has meaning.

William Scrots:

I love this painting. Beautiful. This is Elizabeth I btw, as a Princess (when both her brother and sister were still alive, unlikely to die and leave her the crown).

Although I'm an atheist I love late Medieval art work, from Bibles and Book of Hours. Here is just one example:

From a 15th Century Book of Hours.

I LOVE this painting of Pavlova by Lavery. In real life the colours are amazing. Looks like there are glowing embers on her cape. Astounding.

And anything by Van Gogh, especially this one. Again, in real life the colours are amazing. I didn't really care much for his work until I went to an exhibition, and when I saw the real life works, they blew me away.

Got to say I love Bacon's work too, my fav being his Tripych currently on display on Tate Modern:

I believe the three studies... are in Tate Britain (or at least I remember them being there). I love the scale of the Triptych and the richness of its colour

Escher - Day and Night

Escher - Concave and convex

And of course...

Ascending and descending (sums up my life )
