Default Official SAUK Chat Instructions

Hi Everyone,

This is Sophie from chat. I'm going to use this thread to add instructions for the various IRC clients and web IRC clients out there. If anyone is thinking of trying chat please come and join us. The chat room is busiest in the evenings, especially weekend evenings. If you feel like talking is too much, feel free to just hang with us and watch

Edit:
The quickest way to jump straight in is with a webclient.

Either with Mibbit: https://chat.mibbit.com/?channel=%23...=irc.rizon.net
Or Kiwi IRC: https://kiwiirc.com/nextclient/irc.r...et/sauk-lounge

Just fill in your desired nickname when requested and you're in

What follows is instructions for those that would prefer to run their own IRC client:
(end edit)

To start with, here are instructions for Icechat, a freeware client.

Grab the Icechat installer from https://www.icechat.net/site/downloads/

At the time of writing the correct one is the third one down in the list, the non-portable version.

Save and launch the installer. If you are prompted to download and install the .net framework then do so.

After installation, when you first run Icechat you will be prompted for a nick name. This will be the name other people see in chat, so don't use your real name (if you don't want to!)

Click next and you will be asked for a server name. Enter irc.rizon.net

Click next again and the main Icechat window will appear. We just need to setup the SAUK chat channel that Icechat should automatically join.

To do this right click irc.rizon.net in the favourites list top left, click Edit Server, then click the Auto Join tab.

In the channel box enter #sauk-lounge and click add. You should end up with the following result:

Click Save.

Right click irc.rizon.net again and click Connect. In a few seconds you should be online! The list of online users are on the right, users in italics are marked away. Chat messages appear in the main window and you can type new messages in the box at the bottom.

That's it for Icechat. If you have any questions feel free to PM me or ask in this thread. Happy chatting

Those instructions posted by yaz are far too complicated for me, James; if you're using a PC or laptop, just go to the sticky posted by far "How to get into SAUK chat with Mibbit". Although the post is dated August 2017, the links have been updated and should take you straight to SAUK lounge.

Hi James. Icechat is just the first set of instructions. There are other clients you can use to connect, I'm going to cover too of those soon: Mirc and Hexchat.

For most chatters Mibbit is fine. Dedicated clients give you more resilience in case Mibbit's website goes down and more customisability for the colour scheme and interface. Suppose it depends what you want from a client and how much you use it. Also if you want to register your NICK and use NICKSERV then a dedicated client is recommended.

While we're on the topic of Web Clients there is another one with a nice clean modern interface called Kiwi IRC. Works pretty much like Mibbit does:

https://kiwiirc.com/nextclient/irc.r...et/sauk-lounge

Change the Nick to whatever name you like and click start.

Would it be possible to access the chatroom from my C64? (don't have one yet but will do soon). Could you write the code please?

Next set of IRC client instructions is Hexchat. A freeware open-source client that is updated regularly by its developer.

Get the official installer from https://hexchat.github.io/downloads.html

I recommend the one labelled Windows 7+64bit Installer (or 32bit if you're old skool.) The Windows 10 App is the same, but make sure to select the trial version. It's still the full version without limits on use.

Save and run the installer. Tweak the install options if you fancy, but the defaults are fine too.

On first run of the app you will just see the Network List window. Fill in what nickname you would like and any other choices in case the one you want is taken by another user. Scroll down the list of networks to find Rizon. Click this and click Edit.

A second window appears!
- Tick Connect to this network automatically.
- Click Autojoin channels, click Add and enter #sauk-lounge. (Make sure to press enter after typing rather than clicking elsewhere or it doesn't save.)
- Do the same again for the channel #sauk.

Click close, and, if you like tick "Skip network list on startup" to avoid seeing the Network List each time you run Hexchat.

You should end up with something like the below:

Now click connect and wait a few seconds. You should now be in! Just like with IceChat, users online are on the right, greyed users are marked away and text input is at the bottom.

Off-topic: Hexchat is my favourite client as it is so simple to use, and by changing the background colour to black and foreground to white it's very easy on the eye for long periods

Hi John. Which chat app is it? There are a few free ones for Android. I will have a look at them soon and make some instructions
