New person. Hello!
Hey everyone,
Well, it all started last night when I was Googling something about 'how to make friends', and I happened to read a post on another forum, written by some university student in his third year who said he was lonely and friendless. I read through the replies, and someone had mentioned something about social anxiety. I had no idea 'social anxiety' was a name for anything, it was the first time I'd ever heard it. But I was intrigued, so I looked it up - and couldn't believe what I read because it sounded *exactly* like me. I had no idea that there were other people in the world having exactly the same problems as me. I guess I just thought I was weird and there was nothing I could do about it. I'm almost kicking myself for not finding this out sooner. But I'm glad I have. It's given me a bit of hope, maybe I don't have to be like this, and maybe I can learn how to stop listening to the negatives in my head and turn my life around somehow. A bit of info on me: I'm in my late 20s, currently at university in Norwich. I'm married, but apart from my husband I don't really have any real life friends, just a couple of people who I sit with in lectures sometimes. Desperately want to learn how to start dealing with my problems in a more positive way, instead of feeling like there's no hope for me. I can be a fun person when I'm comfortable with the people I'm with, but my personality just seems to vanish whenever I meet new people. I get so obsessed with trying to make a good impression, I end up being goofy and stupid and trying-too-hard and it's bad. Hoping to meet some nice people here and figure out what my first steps are going to be. I've been dealing with this for so long that I've decided I would like to try and get some help on the NHS, but I'm weary about asking for help when I know that it may just come down to whether or not my doctor 'gets' it, or is willing to help. I guess I'll just have to try it and see. Thanks for reading! |

Re: New person. Hello!
Welcome!
I've Googled that exact same thing before....lol. I can empathise with what you say and good luck on the site and with getting help on the NHS. |

Re: New person. Hello!
Thanks Lass and Lizard!
Lizard - too bad you're not at the UEA, might've bumped into you! Actually, I'll take that back - have you seen the place? It's so grey and concretey, really depressing at this time of year, hehe... <shudder> |
