Open back buses that you could jump off while still moving. None of this newfangled nanny state stopping of buses and opening doors. Just wait till it slows down round a corner and jump off! First time I did it, I jumped off in the opposite direction and fell flat on my face....

The Rambler station wagon.

On family trips, we'd lay down in the back and enjoy the ride.

Perfect summers.

When I were a lad, there were 8 weeks of perfect weather in the summer holidays. It would be a constant 78 degrees fahrenheit in the daytime (none of this celcius rubbish then), and 70 in the nightime with a nice cooling breeze. It was never too hot and never too cold, but just right.

These days, its cloudy 5 days out of 7 and when it does get hot, it reaches about 97 degrees. Theres no ozone left either so you burn to a crisp within seconds of walking out the door.

I really dont know what happened to the weather, but I suspect its to do with chemtrails.

And where have all the bloody butterflies gone??

Lead water pipes.

In the house where I grew up (council), we had lead water pipes. In the morning we had to run the water for a few minutes to get rid of most of the poison which had accumulated during the night. Seems quite shocking to think of now and I wonder what effect it had on us at the time. Maybe that's why the summers seemed so nice; we were all stoned on lead (don't try this at home kids).

Now, lead pipes are illegal, so the government puts flouride in the water instead.

Yes, but that was not a standard feature. Looks like somebody modified his wagon; maybe he's on the local town's volunteer fire department or something.

Chocolate doesn't taste the same now. A Toblerone bar used to be my favourite when I was a kid but since 2000 it tastes like oil. I also miss the old brand names like Marathon and Opal Fruits. Today these bars have really stupid names.

Watching Test Cricket on black and white TV. More mysterious. The Ashes tests in Australia were especially memorable in the sixtees.

I certainly remember Nitty Nora and those free milks. As I was a weedy child through asthma, the primary school mistress (who we had to call 'Madam') ordered an extra one and I had to drink TWO during the morning break. I remember the icey cold headache on really chilly mornings and her telling me that I was ungrateful for her kindness when it threatened to come back up. She was a Victorian in a teachings and sadism but she taught me to read quickly - well, you would if the thought of a ruler over your knuckles for asking the same word twice was a reality. Disappointed that no-one remembered the black and white BBC channel with the potter's wheel being on during the interval. Seems surreal now.

Cheers (I'm really enjoying this! Most fun I've had for a long time. I know. I need to get out more. I wish)

Theo

I was the "milk monitor" for our school in my last year. Which meant me and another got to spend an hour delivering the milk to the classes....also allowed us to drink several bottles and raid the fridge in the school kitchen. I always thought we were raiding it anyway, but looking back, it seems a bit odd that everything in it was wrapped up or in containers, except one plate which had either cookies or a couple of apples on

I don't remember this, but I do remember our black and white tv. It took bloody ages to warm up (!) and when you turned it off, youd get a little dot in the centre for a while.
When we got a colour one, I thought it was the most amazing thing ever. It even had a remote control. Im not sure how this worked, but you could also turn the tv over by shaking the dogs chain. Ahh the many hours spent annoying my brother with that.

"Muuuuum, tell Stuart, hes shaking the chain!!"

"I'm not mum, he's lying".

<ouch!>

"Muuuuuuum...he kicked me!!!"

Stuart exits stage left in tears.

Shaking the dog's lead, that was something. I remember that dot. It had to fade, if I rem' correctly before being switched off.

Remember the old mangle and washing tub coming out on a Monday morning and the sweet taste of Camp coffee - the height of sophistication (my teacher would have been thrilled to see I spelt icy with an 'e') Never mind your caffertierres (certainly spelt that incorrectly) there was nothing like Camp!

I remember my mum had to wash the clothes in the bath (including real cloth nappies!), though we didn't have a mangle. I do remember a hymn about Auntie Mable catching a certain part of her anatomy in one though...

Caffertierres....were those the aluminium percolators with a glass thing on top where you could watch the coffee bubbling through? They were great!

Speaking of kids songs:

Nobody loves me, everybody hates me,
might as well go and eat worms,
fat ones, thin ones, long ones, short ones,
ones that squiggle and squirm.

Bite their heads off, suck their juice out,
throw their skins away!
Nobody knows how I survive on worms three times a daaaaay.
