Default The cars your family had when you were a child

One of the first cars I remember my parents having was a Talbot Alpine, similar to this one but it was an older 'V' reg.

It was a top of the range model and had electric front windows, central locking, headlight wipers and best of all, a vinyl roof. But it kept breaking down all the time so it got traded in for a Ford Cortina.

I remember my grandad having a delightful blue Austin Maxi like this one:

It had vinyl seats which stuck to your legs when you were wearing shorts in the summer.

We didn't have a car when I was a child but my dad's first car was a Reliant Robin.
He failed his driving test twice so got that as he could drive it on his motorbike licence.

I can remember a few. We had a Morris Oxford, a Ford Anglia, a Ford Cortina Mk1, a Hillman Imp, a Simca 1500, many Vauxhall Vivas, a Ford Fiesta and a Ford Escort. There were probably others that I can't recall.

The Hillman Imp was my favourite. It was white and had a top speed of about 65mph. I remember when I was about 12 and I used to help my dad when he was a milkman. He had to do all his paperwork when we got back to the dairy and gave me the car keys and said, "go and sit in the car while I do this". It was the first car I ever drove - well what was I suppose to do?

These are the only two cars I remember my granddad having the Austin somerset when I was a very young and the morris minor 1000 until his death. Both were the same colour as the cars pictured .

My uncle was good with cars, he kept them for years until they fell to bits so he only had four in the 25 years that I knew him before his death in 1990. Most of those years are covered by these two cars, Triumph Herald Estate and Vauxhall Viva HB both in the correct colour.

He then had an Opel Kadet A for a couple of years and an Hillman Avenger for just over a year before he died.

As for my dad well he went through so many I could fill this tread with them so here are a few favourites Ford Capri mk1 Facelift, Ford Corsair (he had two one red and later one in white), Ford Cortina mk1, Ford Zephyr 6 (had been re-sprayed in dark green with a black vinyl roof, so can't find a matching picture) and a Rover P6 2000 (1st issue colour of willow green, can't find a picture in that colour so have used one of my vanguards model)

The Citroen spot on!But the Rover's not.It was older than that I think.Definitely bugger body and shorter in length.

Nothing particularly interesting or exotic...

Datsun Sunny 120Y
Datsun Cherry N10
Nissan Sunny B11
Nissan Micra K11

Incidentally, the Datsun brand recently made a comeback, with this sexy beast:

^I'd always thought Datsun became Nissan.

Hmm, just looked it up, apparently "only vehicles exported by Nissan were identified as Datsun".

Some sort of Fiat thing, and later Ford Fiestas. We also had one of those campervans with the roof that would lift up and provide space for me and my sister to sleep in. Later he bought a Transit van and converted it into a motorcaravan (a proper job with kitchen area etc). Now they have a Romahome and another Ford Fiesta.
I think my Dad had a Reliant Robin before I was born.

These are the cars we had from about 1979 to 2000. I wasn't born until 1982, but I can remember us still having the golf when I started primary school. In approximate order:

Yellow Mk 1 Golf
Purple Mini Cooper
Brown Mk 3 Ford Escort Estate
Maroon Mk 3 Ford Escort
Maroon Mk 4 Ford Escort
Red/White VW T3 High-top Camper
Maroon Austin Montego
Metallic Blue Hyundai Accent

We never had cars when I was growing up. It's something that used to pain me because I've always been car mad. We sometimes hired one for a week for day trips in the summer, it was usually a brand-new Talbot Sunbeam or Avenger as there was a dealer just near us.

My own first car was a Hillman Imp in Neptune blue metallic.

My dad had a 1963 Ford Anglia and then a 1972 Vauxhall Viva. Spend every weekend traveling back and forth to our caravan in Bridlington. Happy Days!

I vaguely remember :

Mk1 ford escort.
Mk2 ford escort.
Austin Allegro.

The neighbours in the 80s had a Vauxhall Viva with dreadful black leather seats that would be burning hot in the summer..
