My boiler being repaired! I thought it was getting cold indoors, but I didn't realise the boiler was kaput until I tried to do the washing up. After an hour, I finally managed to get through to the emergency repair line at the council and I'm 73rd in the queue, so it's anybody's guess when it'll get sorted.

In other news, I've just booked a break in Naples and Sicily (to see Pompeii and hike up Mount Etna) for later in the month.

EDIT: I seem to have embarked on a new career as a central heating engineer and I've managed to get the boiler working again, so it's just the holiday I have to look forward to.

I just got impulsive and booked my flights to Peru, two weeks earlier than I was planning to do (I was waiting until my main credit card billed to defer the cost); however, I have only booked the flights and sent a request for a place on the Machu Picchu trek, I'll book the internal flights (for which the prices are unlikely to vary), buses and stuff later.

For some reason, I couldn't sleep last night because I kept running my intended itinerary through my mind; also, I received a rebate from my electricity provider in the early hours of this morning which was almost equivalent to the price of the flights so I thought I would secure them whilst the dates I wanted were available. This morning, I checked the feasibility of my intended itinerary and prices of internal transport before booking and then took the plunge.

So now, I am looking forward to the trip I've dreamed about for years!

^You're more sensible than I am, you're going in the dry season! I'm going in November, which is wet season (actually, the total rainfall for November is roughly the same as in October, but on average it rains on 8 days in October and 12 in November). My itinerary is Lima - Puerto Maldonado (for the Amazon) - Cusco (for Sacred Valley / Machu Picchu) - Puno (for Titicaca) - La Paz & back to Lima, so I won't be doing Arequipa. I was looking at September / October, but I have my heart set on doing the full 4-days' Machu Picchu trek and that's totally sold out to the end of September with very limited availability for October, so I got my permit for 14th November.

I'm going to be very jealous knowing that you're there before me!

I'm guessing you're going to Hatfield? I'm going to Birmingham because I've other festivals on the dates of north and south events.

Eurovision!!
I know I say this every year but I always do look forward to it. Portugal themed party this year. All I've got planned so far is that I've been trying out the Portuguese wines. Nando's is Portuguese... they do nice bean burgers... is that still Portuguese?

I found where Eurovision is going to be held when I was in Lisbon last month, although there seems to be little publicity .

You mention bean burgers, so are you looking for vegetarian Portuguese dishes, or will anything do? The Portuguese invented cod in batter (as in good old fish & chips, although the Belgians were responsible for the chips), otherwise there is caldo verde (potato and cabbage soup), pastel de nata (custard tart), empanada (fried pasty), pork and clams (traditional Algarve dish), swordfish with banana (which is Madeiran, but that's still part of Portugal) and anything piri piri, to name just a few.

Good suggestions thank you. We don't eat meat or fish so certain things we can't do. If I don't get much prep time it may be that I just slather things in piri piri sauce and call it Portuguese.

^^ I can't believe I forgot bolo de caco, I ate quite a bit of that in Madeira a couple of months ago!

I'm looking forward to the second day of Mac-Stock, which starts in about half an hour. After that, I have a couple of hours (thanks to the clocks going forward) before leaving for Stansted.

^You're very welcome, Hermann and I hope it goes well, I'm really pleased to see that you're going through with it.

If you find yourself struggling with anything, don't give up, just get in touch as I'm not far down the road and may be able to help - I'll be back in the country at the end of April and don't have any plans to travel - yet - in May. I'm sure you'll be fine though and that we're all looking forward to hearing how it went and your plans for Spain.

Rhubarb!
The rhubarb on the allotment has grown strong despite the crazy weather and it'll soon be ready for picking.
