Since christmas I've been reading Mo Hayder on and off. Started her DI Jack Caffery series (Birdman, The Treatment, Ritual, Skin, Gone) and having finished Gone last night I'm just about to read one of her stand alone stories "Hanging Hill". She's a really good writer, I wouldn't necessarily have considered myself a crime-fiction fan previously but her stories are very captivating if you like suspense and some dark plot lines.

Shadowplay by Tad Williams, not as good as the dragonbone chair series but I'm still enjoying it

Really liking this series, I'm whizzing through it now and have almost finished this one, so secretly hoping for the next book for my birthday

Last Exit to Brooklyn by Hubert Selby Jr. Juxtaposed with listening to the Cricket on the radio makes for an interesting experience.

The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie; wanted to read it to find out what all the fuss was about. It's a bit trippy so far

Finally finished Saturday by Ian McEwan. It was well written and quite moving in places but overall a bit, well, dull.

Now tucking into The bonfire of the vanities by Tom Wolfe. I like his snappy, punchy, in-yer-grille style. It's 700-odd pages long, so see you about the same time next year.

Thumbs up Re: What book(s) are you reading at the moment?

it takes a while for the book to actually get going - as in her discussions into her depression the causes of which are ambiguously there ...she deals for the most part with depression as the fully fledged monster it does become for here and not her route into it

once its gets goin she doesn't hold punches or hide under this or that - its warts and all account

very interesting read -

The Book Of The New Sun (Shadow & Claw) by Gene Wolfe, well actually I just finished it, but still. Didn't realise it was a four part series, need to buy the rest now.

Four-month update: Halfway through though enjoying it. It got a mention on Futurama the other night, though not in an entirely complimentary way.

got a few books about St. Francis of Assisi lately,... for some reason I thought he'd be an interesting read,
I'm finding that he was a bit of a fanatical ascetic,.. almost on a par with Jaina monks,..( who live naked and beg for food and bathe once a year etc. )
the way he lived and behaved just seems way too austere and almost akin to self-torture,..
I was hoping to glean something uplifting from his writings and teachings but I just can't relate to his self-torture,... seems that that's what passed for religion in those times though.
