Default Cooking

Ok I figure its time I learnt how to cook if I want to plan for the future but the grandest thing I have ever done is like a sandwich or cheese on toast. And microwave stuff. Otherwise someone else always does it. Or I buy chips.

So im just looking for any great advice on different sources of information to help me. Be it a cooking book for dummies, video guide, tv shows, websites, cooking lessons or whatever else I cant think of.

Im not an idiot im a bit of a techy guy and can build pc's etc but I donno what a oven is or how to boil an egg without burning the house down. I can probably ask someone to help me with the basics but I really need some novice guides to help me out. I dont want just basics either but basic-medium difficulty stuff that will keep me alive. I would like to move out on my own one day so I need to know how to eat healthy.

So if we can find stuff thats good for a healthy diet that sounds good. I dont want to just stick things in a microwave but maybe some basic meals I can make myself.

Im willing to maybe take some lessons but I dont know how I would begin to look up such information besides google. Hoping someone might be able to show me something usefull that can put me in the right direction. Hopefully something were I wouldnt feel too stupid when I dont know what im doing.

Someone must know something here that can help. Dont make fun of me. :D This is a 'health' related discussion and seeking advice.

(Any responses I reply later in the day.)

You could try Delia Smith's How to cook books, there are three in the series and a video as well - I like her stuff, but beware of her deserts, I have put on an extra few pounds because of them.

You could treat your inner geek to "the Complete Idiot's Guide to Cooking Science and Techniques"
I have not read this but it is on my wish list.

On the lighter side there are umpteen videos of how to boil an egg and probably other cooking stuff on youtube, I find this one very relaxing, but I don't know what that red thing is they put in the water.

I suggest you find yourself a girlfriend / wife.

charity shops or 2nd hand bookshops usually have oodles of cook books. I got one called 'cooking for one', and one for students that were pretty good for starting out.

Also the food makers often have good little recipes on the packets or on their websites that are worth a go.
