^/^^^ Marmite's for people think the abolition of British monarchy would have little effect on the country's tourism. Traitors!

I like Um-Bongo (they drink it in the jungle) because I also like the outdoors.

some gaming is no different from puzzle books, except more dynamic and less monochrome. I would actually recommend gaming to old people as some games can be great for challenging the brain.

I remember seeing a TV segment once were they treated various illnesses by having the sick person play a computer game that destroyed the illness as they played it (not literally though). It created a sort of placebo mind-over-matter effect and helped them to get over the illness quicker !

Nope, because I can't afford to. In my current financial situation, if I wanted to become a gamer I'd have to commit a crime and go to prison.

You probably have a smartphone. Or secondly you can get a second hand wii (or many other consoles) for not very much, as well as should be cheap games for that.

I played in a clan too

Quake 2 was my favourite, but I was late to the party and it couldn't compete with 3 (which is still played ).

'tis true, Horace Goes Skiing was the pinnacle of gaming. Playing any other game is just an attempt to relive the experience, such as GTA V.

Quake III Arena. That's a blast from the past. I used to have my own clan on the Dreamcast version. Ran up a massive phone bill and had to get the line cut off.

Well I did play quake 2 first and eventually (reluctantly) moved onto quake 3 because the q2 scene was dying off. I've also played quake live over the years which is basicly q3.

SAUK gaming Clan?

Oh I certainly got into trouble many times for extreme phone bills when I was playing Q2 online with dialup!!!

I use to play Team Fortress Classic pretty much all through my teens. It got to the point we had to get ISDN installed just to solve the arguments over the phone line. If it wasn't huge fights with my sister over who got to use the one PC, it was Dad bitching about how he could never make any phone calls.

I remember when they finally rolled out broadband in our (small town) area. 500k! Our house was right on the range limit so it was a bit dodgy, but even then it was still like Christmas had come early

Some things are worth the effort

There was a website you could check which showed you the estimated upgrade date for your local exchange. People would run campaigns too to get BT to upgrade ours sooner. Use to check that thing like weekly

Before we went with Screaming Net (which had the first free off-peak dial-up, and the reason I started staying up at night), I'd rack up some phone bills, but I was all responsible and kept track of the cost Paid for £90 worth over the summer of '99
Once we got ADSL I'd stopped playing much online, but all that porn...

I was in a TFC clan too I was beastly as a soldier

I mainly played medic/scout. I hope you weren't one of those soldiers who could aim perfect even when conc'd

I remember one year, some ISP came with a FREE 0800 number to use. Everyone must have swapped to that thing, it was GLORIOUS. Until they went bust after about 6 months!

^^ Na not that good, but I used to get accused of cheating because I was good at predicting (which isn't a surprise when you've been used to Q2 rocket launcher!)

There was an ISP with a 0800 that I used, didn't have to pay anything, what were they thinking? Used to take an hour to connect sometimes.

Could you not afford 56k?

Didn't they become Freeserve before that? My memories seem a bit confused around that time

The trouble with Q2, as you will remember, is that ping was everything. So if I was playing on say BT Internet 0800 I would end up as a SHPB and I couldn't hit anything so I would dialup a pay ISP to get a decent ping and then I was much more competitive HPB. Then the phone bill would arrive and I would be torn to shreds by my Mum for running up a huge bill!

Fortunately I eventually got a free 0800 ISP that had a good ping

Then I got Cable and became an LPB.

FYI for those of you who don't understand SHPB, HPB and LPB - It stands for Super High Ping Bastard (250+ ping), High Ping Bastard (130+ Ping) and Low Ping Bastard (30+ ping)

The Q2 Rocket Launcher was very slow so prediction was absolutely neccessary!! Whereas the Q3 Rocket Launcher was super fast and took some getting used to

Yeah loads of people were on BT Internet, how they played was beyond me. I was one of the lucky ones with a ping of about 120. Didn't help me though because as soon as we played matches the adrenaline would sky rocket and I couldn't hit anything

I think it was screaming net, then worldonline, then I cant remember if it was tiscali or freeserve. Screaming net was great until it got popular and then its days of redialing.
At least they limited it unlike BT where you could all connect but it was completely overloaded

The Amiga I had was expanded with extra RAM and an accelerator card with 68030 CPU on it so I could use WWW with it. The most impressive thing I found on it (I am 13 at this point) was the IRC chat which I thought was incredible! I can type things to people on the other side of the world! (Instead of going outside and talking with real people haha) and then I found the porn ! (doh)

So getting SA is partially due to being the first generation to be born and raised browsing the wild west that was/is the internet!

Aww I use to hate Dustbowl. I think 2fort and Well were the ones I played most. I spent way too long practising bunny-hopping on the Well map.

Did any of you TFC players move on to TF2? I used to play it for a while. Not sure if my computer could handle it now.

TF2 I firmly found a great game, but sadly my old computer and current mini computer could not handle it.
