Thanks a lot people. It really helps just knowing that I'm not alone here. I'll let you know how the group goes if I get enough courage to actually go.

Best wishes.

Default Books that might help

I found a book called "blue like jazz", Its a spirtuality book from one christian guys perspective, I thought it raised some great points, and i advise anyone feeling depressed, lonely to pick it up, read the chapter called alone

I found it out by stumbling accross a video on youtube link below
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5chuI5pRJr0
some guy reads a passage from the book which many of you will no doubt relate.

any other good books out there that might help feel free to add.

I think it'd be nice to have a sticky thread of book, CD and DVD recommendations.

What do the mods think?

The Gillian Butler one is the one that's always recommended. 'Overcoming Social Anxiety and Shyness'.

Hey,

I few books helped me:

'Don't Panic' R Wilson
'Triumph over fear' J Ross
'Dying of Embarrassment' Markaway, Carmin, Pollard and Flynn.

To be fair, there are a lot of books out there that may help. I know many people don't rate self-help books, but if your ready to face your fears and chuck yourself into it, then I think there great. I had a few books for many months before I was ready to really follow them. Then I did it in my own time and have over come many of my irrational thoughts and fears.

This is the first time I have visited this site in many months. I generally lead a happy life, pretty much free from SA so good luck. Also expect setbacks... I had many, but a very wise person on this site (Innervision I do believe)told me that setbacks are there to over come, its not easy, but they indicate that your moving forward.

Don't stnad still for too long X

I've been reading Parallel Parked in a Diagonal Universe by Signe A Dayhoff for a while now, my concentration span for books like this is pretty poor, but it's full of useful stuff.

The way I tend to approach self help books is to read them and mark with a pencil useful passages that jump out at me, so I don't have to trawl through entire chapters again to refresh my memory. My copy of Parallel Parked is full of underlines and notes in the margin where I've condensed perhaps two or three paragraphs into a form I can quickly read back and go "ah, I remember, that's a useful bit".

The author's website is www.effectiveness-plus.com/

Just looked at it now, not seen it for a bit, you're greeted by a voice recording of her talking about her work in a slightly "I've changed my life, you can too!" type way. Good site though, she still does a monthly mailshot addressing different aspects of SA.

I bought the book mentioned above - though I can't find my copy - and found it very helpful.

Go to the link "37 new and used". I get my books from Aphrohead books as is cheaper and as reliable (if not more) than amazon. Usually arrive in a few days if in stock.

that's a popular one.

i think you can probably gerrit from the library if you don't fancy buying it.
There's also a self help course that co-insides with that book, well worth getting.

I also reccommend the same book - it's a good overview of SA and how to treat it with CBT. It's also a British book, so refreshingly there aren't lots of irritating Americanisms.

One of my favourites is this. It's quite old, but it's a great overall book about how to have a good self-image and self-esteem. That's often crucial to overcoming SA.

I have the Gillian Butler one too, it's the one psychologists usually recommend. Gives a fairly good overview of the condition, even if it does get itself into a bit of a muddle over the whole Shyness / Social Anxiety definition problem.

The two books recommended to me by my psychiatrist are

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Feeling-Hand...6282647&sr=1-1

which is a pretty long book which shows how to apply CBT to a large variety of difficulties, including SA. Its written in a very chatty and easy to read style.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Overcoming-D...6282892&sr=1-1

SA and depression often go hand in hand (do they? Discuss!) and I think depression can really hold someone back from trying to deal with SA (certainly has for me). This book is really good on the various facets of depression and on ways to understand it and deal with it.

Default Re: Collection of SA/self-help book recommendation threads

I just found "CBT for dummies" . ( think thats the title) . sorry if its been previously mentioned. Cant be bothered to read the whole thread through!

Its in the same serious as those black and yellow computer books. Seems very good. It tells you almost everything a CBT therapist would tell you . Though of course I would always say that a therapist can give you the support that makes things much easier. Perhaps reading this book is useful before or during actual "real" therapy.
