When was the first time you remember avoiding people?
I was about 6 years old.
Some of my family came over and I hid in a bedroom. I was'nt even aware of myself or the world at that age yet I still avoided people. |

Re: When was the first time you remember avoiding people?
part of my avoidant personality disorder is not being able to bear physical contact
when i was diagnosed a big part was based on not only my lack of social skills and anxiety but on the fact that as a baby i would not be cuddled, i just cried when i was picked up! so i guess ive been avoiding human contact all my life this has been much more of a problem over the last 4 years when avpd has disrupted my work, my homelife everything when i was in outpatients after my diagnosis i was 'studied' by a psychology student, as i was thought to be interesting lol however i found out loads about avpd thru her and about myself too |

Re: When was the first time you remember avoiding people?
When I was 9 I was at a family 'do' and I suddenly became upset and distressed for no reason. After leaving for a while, I came back in but it happened again.

Re: When was the first time you remember avoiding people?
Since I was about 5. I spent years putting on a front and somehow "coped" but it became very difficult and unbearable when I went to college. I was bullied during that period of my life and it made my social anxiety worse.

Re: When was the first time you remember avoiding people?
The first time I was actually aware of it I was probably about 4. It was one christmas and we had a selection of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, there.
I remember being overwhelmed by it all and taking myself off to my bedroom. After a while my dad came up and told me off for being 'rude' and made me go back downstairs. Before that I was always shy and reserved with strangers, but that christmas was the first time I was aware of being anxious even with people I knew quite well. Too far back for me to remember, but apparently even when I was a baby I didn't like people being around me. When my parents had visitors I'd crawl under the table and stay there until they left. And I would apparently get upset and cry if they talked or laughed loudly. |
