Default Very scared about my future

My day-to-day life is great. I socialise, and I have been exploring Europe. Day-to-day anxiety is almost non-existant and I can go about town with no problems. I am back living with my Mum which isn't ideal, but it means I get a nice room and don't have to worry about rent. I have a job at a school.

So, my life sounds good (and it is!). However, I am very scared about my future. It is a huge weight on my shoulders and it is affecting my day to day life.
My current job is part time and it is only a temporary contract which ends this summer. To continue, I would need proper qualifications for it. I am a classroom assistant in a school. If I got the qualifications, I would happily continue with this job . However, the job of a teaching assistant is largely part-time zero-hours work. How can I have a good life living like that? I was thinking of being a teacher , but my experience of working in a school has put me off that. Working with kids is great, but the responsibility of a teacher is huge, and everyone I know who is a teacher is incredibly stressed out. Teaching is not for me.

I have no idea what I want to do. Every job I look at looks horrifying and very stressful. I don't want a job taking over my life. I have no ambition for anything, except to eat at nice restaurants and to go on holidays. But you need a good job to afford holidays.

If I don't find a solution for this, I'm very scared that I will do something stupid. I feel lazy and useless. I really feel like I don't fit in to this society.

The fact that your anxiety is so much better and you're able to do things now is great

In terms of work, it's positive that you've been able to find something you've enjoyed, that's a good start. There might be other jobs in a similar area that you could do and maybe teaching assistant type jobs will become a bit more secure in the near future.

Personally I think that your health and wellbeing is more important than having a job where you make a lot of money but it's very stressful. (Although obviously I know you need to be able to support yourself.) You don't have to have everything figured out straight away.

There are plenty of teaching assistant jobs that aren't part-time zero-hours work. In fact, I've not come across any TA positions whilst I've been job searching that are zero hours.

I'm a teacher, and whilst rewarding, I wouldn't recommend it as a career to anyone. I'd love to be in a support role instead, like a teaching assistant, but it wouldn't pay enough for me unfortunately.

That's a good thought. I could work in a different sort of job with children. I haven't really looked into it. Although working in a local museum could interest me - and as many museums have schools visiting, it could look good on my CV that i've worked with children. Council cuts have already closed one museum recently, lets hope they don't close them all

Thanks Dougella

Yes, looking at it positively, its great i've actually got a job at the moment, and that i'm enjoying it. So, things right now are really good. But the thought of the future is almost stopping me from making the most of what i've currently got. Hopefully I might be able to find a secure TA job.

I definately agree. Health and wellbeing is the most important thing. A lot of people don't realise that. I'm not too bothered about earning lots of money - as long as I can support myself and enjoy life.

Thank you Tiger_Lily! Its great to know your perspective as a teacher. I know lots of people who are teachers - friends and family, some new teachers, some old teachers. They all say the same thing - that they would not recommend it. And that includes people who have a positive outlook on life.
With zero-hours part time TA positions - My current school, most of the TA positions are zero hours and part time. At different schools people work at, they are more permanent hours, but seem to be mostly minimum wage - that isn't necessarily a deal-breaker for me (would prefer it to be paid more though).

Never lose sight of the fact that you have so much going for you - don't miss an opportunity to remind yourself of what you've achieved. That really is important.

It's always all-too-easy to fall into a slump. I know that first-hand! But you've got a lot going on and a lot to look forward to in your future - you shouldn't be worried or scared about that!

From what you've said, it seems you're made for your chosen career. Teaching is hard, for sure; but you're unique and very much suited for it - you have so much to offer.

Believe in yourself!

Is there a chance that your current employer could offer you a permanent contract, I'm confused about the qualifications you require considering you're already doing the job. You've achieved many things this year and should be very proud of yourself.
