This question also annoys me, I went thru this with my counsellor last year. She suggested I answer something like 'yes I am, but you don't know me very well as there's much more to me than that'. Normally I just shy away from the question but at least a response like this would stop the other person dead in their tracks...

Empty vessels make the most noise.

Just say you are thinking or you have lots on your mind (not the usual big brother/skating on ice rubbish that everyone else seems to talk about).
