Hi everyone. I have been reading the posts on this site for a while but only just plucked up the courage to register after turning down yet another opportunity to go out. I'm 22 and have been suffering from SA for as long as I can remember, including being physically sick before and during social activities. The only way I seem to avoid such distressing symptoms is by drinking alcohol- but I know this is not the answer and can't rely on this for my entire life. I've tried councelling and various medication but nothing seems to help. Im trying to stay positive but I feel like I am wasting my life. I'm hoping to make some progress by talking to fellow sufferers.

I can relate to what you've said, particularly the drinking to take the edge off your symptoms. I do this myself, unfortunately. Vodka used to be my tipple of choice too, until I was horrendously ill on it one night. I stick to beer now.

i can definately relate to needing a beer before going out. i do it all the time, drinking four cans before setting off to meet the lads. then i get to the pub and start going rounds. so you can imagine what kind of states i get in. then when i wake up the next morning i get embarresed about the night before, so the next time i go out ill have five cans before setting off. its a vicious circle. it was only a couple of years ago i was having one can before going out as a bit of dutch courage so i hope it doesnt get any worse. but i can definately relate to you there vodka princess

Nice to meet you! Yip, know exactly where you are coming from. Before I go out, I usually have a few glasses of wine to loosen up and then a good few more when I get to the bar/club. I just can't imagine going out without drinking anything; it is unthinkable to me. This is quite scary for me to admit actually, but true I'm afraid to say!
