Default Interesting programme- Chris Packham My Asperger's and Me

Well worth a watch. Chris was very open and honest about how his condition had affected him and some of the dark times he has been through.
I could relate to quite a lot of what he said, not being good at socialising, not feeling comfortable in certain situations, especially with people you've not met before, having to remind yourself how to behave with people.

The thing is that Chris had an interest he could make a career out of, as did one of the people who he interviewed who works for Microsoft. It's harder for people who don't have that kind of special skill who struggle with life, especially in getting jobs.

Also, Chris could get on well enough with people to have had relationships, and it was nice seeing him with his partner and step daughter, who both clearly love him very much, even though they both found his condition quite frustrating.

I saw a part of this programme. I never knew he had a condition tbh. Always seemed pretty well adjusted, guess it just shows that for all our worries maybe it's not as noticeable as we think?

I realise he had more than just sa, but still.

Yeah I watched it last night, it was quite interesting. I can't say I particularly identify with him (only very broadly) it was still a good programme, interesting that I grew up watching his shows and yet never realised he had Asperger or would have guessed he struggled in the slightest. The bit about the kestrel was really touching.

I think it just shows you how easy it is to judge people - I always found him a bit of a 'know it all' and full of himself but having watched the programme I can see how his condition means he might come across that way. I have a great deal of respect for him following the programme for being so candid and genuine as to how Asperger's has shaped his life.

I watched this, it was really good I thought. I didn't know before that he had Asperger's!

Excellent film - I only recently found out he was autistic from a magazine article, and was surprised by it. He comes across very assuredly on TV.

Sad that just 14% of autistic people are in full-time employment. As Chris said, a shocking waste. That was one of the most moving parts for me.

I thought it was a good watch. Moving and inspirational in parts. You can tell he's gone through a lot, but sort of found peace with it all now. By that, I mean he said he'd not now take a 'cure' pill even if one were available. That's a bit like I see my own SA. It's been hell, but I'd change nothing now. I've made my peace with it.

But anyway, he's an interesting guy and I think this programme is a good watch for people wondering how AS can affect people.

Given he's a celebrity and able to afford it I wonder whether he was diagnosed privately. That's an option not realistically available to many of us who are middle aged and whose childhood coincided with a time when the definition of autism was much more narrow.
There are quite a few of us out there with marked autistic traits/could very well be on the spectrum who struggle to get our problems recognised enough to be put forward for assessment.

Often we are seen in negative and unflattering terms and certainly don't get the help and support we need . Personally I would like to see a program that focuses on those of us in that unfortunate position rather than a celebrity with aspergers.

I don't think I have Aspergers but took the test anyway to see what I scored.

Some of the questions though I wasn't sure how to answer when in social group situation and what other people say about you.
Avoid them so I having nothing to reference as an answer.

Your AQ Test Score is: 37

Didn't know about this - I'll have a look on iPlayer. I received my "official" ASD diagnosis last year (my self tested AQ score was 36).

I'm not Aspergers, but did the test just to see my result. I got 14.

I took the test and scored 27 but I think that any traits I might have are a result of severe SA and not being on the autistic spectrum. There are a few people who are diagnosed as Autistic in my extended family and there is a lot of difference between them and their difficulties too, but there's certainly a lot more help available from a younger age now and I think that makes a big difference.

Caught the end of this last night, it was very interesting, will have to watch the whole thing, even if just to learn a bit more about Aspergers.

I scored 18 on the test.

He never came across to me as someone who would struggle socially - I didn't know about his aspergers.

I watched this again last night with my partner who had not seen it previously. She was very impressed. It's well worth watching.

No, from what we have seen of him on television in the past he never really come across as someone who would struggle socially. Mind you, Gary Numan comes over as a very skilled communicator these days in interviews, but he has also struggled socially due to having Aspergers.

I scored 37,.. which is a bit sad as I felt I was getting better generally,..
I did recall seeing Packham bloke on telly and thought he was a bit rude and lacked social tact,
I guess I know why he came across that way now,
I don't pay my TV licence so won't be watching him talking about himself for an hour,.. oh bum!
