Default Anyone ever had Genealogy DNA test done?

Had mine done recently and it was really interesting. Found out I was 44% northern England (proper northerner), 27% Ireland, 17% Scandanavian (that'll be the Vikings), 8% Western Europe and a small percentage Iberian peninsula (does that mean my ancestors came from Africa through Spain?)

Anyway, it got me in touch with 3rd and 4th cousins who I knew nothing of, who live in Australia and Canada and had also had their DNA done. It's been really good.

How did you go about getting it done?
If it's just an online test then I doubt I'd believe it.
Sounds interesting though

^ I think you do a tongue scraping so they can get your dna.

I'd love to know mine! But a small part of me thinks it's a secret to get people's dna on file and I can't ignore that thought haha

I've had mine done by Ancestry,Family tree dna,My heritage and 23and Me. 23andMe has introduced a dots system covering 151 populations. I got 5 dots for the UK, 2 for Ireland and 1 each for Denmark and Norway.

Cheek swab, surely? Unless they double up as oral hygienists.

I'd be really interested to know my make-up but also very, very wary of handing over my DNA. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing wasn't just a ploy to get people to voluntarily hand it over. The Stasi would have loved this kind of thing and Social Media.

You activate your details online, gather your dna, package it, send it to Ancestrydna (based in Ireland). They send it on by courier to their laboratories in USA and then you get results online. I'm quite happy for anyone to have my dna, got nothing to hide.

NAh, I don't need a test to know I'm related to Blackbeard and every other toe rag brigand of infamy. Just need to look at my lot in action to know that

My partner had his DNA done and found he was 44% Western Europe, 33% UK, 24% Ireland and small percentage Russia. He had a feeling his distant ancestors might have been German because of his surname, but was surprised at that percentage and a little disappointed that he was only 33% UK.

I might consider it if it were free, just out of interest, but don't see what I could possibly gain from it; I've never really been interested in my family history (and they are all history now!) and although I'm British by birth, it wouldn't change how I see myself if i were to discover what genes I had.

Yes. Around 75 % "British" (oddly enough) and lots of smaller amounts from all over the place (central Europe, Finland, Norway, Russia, Iberia, Middle East, etc.)

Pika_lilly, you're not related to Susanna Reid are you? She had hers done on Good Morning Britain and if I remember correctly her results were similar.

I've been meaning to have mine done, out of pure interested. But those who aren't too interested in their family tree, you also get the raw data of your DNA in a file format. There are lots of both free and paid for services around to that you can plug your data into and find out more about yourself. Such as which diseases or injuries you may have a predisposition for.

And remember, you could also find a brother or sister that you never knew you had (and therefore a child your father never knew he had :-S)

The best way of working out your ethnicity is probably not through the ethnicity results but through which people turn up as matches to you.

I'd love to do that - it's so interesting!

I downloaded the "Family tree" app last summer but I only managed to find out minor information before hitting a brick wall. I know that you have to pay to access more details, but I can't afford it right now. I was so frustrated
