Have I ever been in love? That's a difficult question to answer. Certainly I've been convinced that I've been in love with different girlfriends at different times in my life - once for almost two years straight - but looking back, I think that I was just in love with the idea of being in love.

Often I've thought that I've loved someone when the truth was that I barely even knew them. In each case, when their true colours came out, they turned out to be a very different person to the one I thought I loved.

Exactly! And I find that people can mean such radically different things when they say that they're in love.

One person can say that they're in love and stay with that partner for years. Another person can say that they're in love, then lose interest and be in love with someone else a week later. To one person, being in love means idolising their partner and putting him or her on a pedestal. Another person can say that they're in love, but treat their partner like crap day in, day out. Whose idea of love is correct? Whose is more valid?
