Default Age Group

Not sure if this has been done before, but what age group represents most of the members of this forum?

Interesting that at present over 60% are 35 or under.

That could be due to computer use amongst younger people is higher or older people are less likely to talk about issues dealing with mental health on an internet forum.

A larger number of voters would be needed before any useful figures are available, so if or when we get to 100, it would be interesting to hear other peoples views on what the figures then show.

I'm 50, but feel and probably look older. When I was 43 I felt about 35 and looked about 35. The last few years has definitely taken it's toll. Even retiring 2 years ago hasn't helped

On the bright side if I was still 21, I'd have to do the last 30 years all over again

Shame there doesn't appear to be anyone over 65 so far - do you think that that's to do with older people not being pc savvy or that they feel like perhaps they wouldn't be welcomed the same as a younger person or that their SA has gone undiagnosed for so long that they don't realise that that's what it is and therefore don't seek help and support? Just wondering

That's the sort of thing I was hoping to discover. I'm not surprised that the vast majority of people on the forum are 35 or under.
In theory there should be an equal number of socially anxious people in all age groups, although as you get older you become less self conscious and therefore the anxiety may diminish.
There is likely to be some impact of internet forum use. I would suspect that many older people do not use internet forums for any purpose and therefore the numbers would be fewer, but for it to be so vastly different (only 2 over 55) is an interesting talking point

Think 65+ generation are either unaware it has a name, or sadly - generally ashamed of "mental" illness Ponytales. My parents (in their 70's) both have it and dont know it... and unfortunately would probably be appalled at being on an internet forum, admitting to and talking about such things.

As it is, I am loathed to admit my age because of others reaction, although I only feel half of it (never been fitter). Dont ever think of my age as being important.

I think that as you reach 55+, you are less likely to carry social anxiety because as previously suggested, most are less self conscious. Obviously there are exceptions to this.
Kinda like older people are more likely to 'get away' with social faux-pas

Hi Ponytales..I think its possible to not be so worried about stuff as you get older.Maybe at a certain point in life you finally realise theres more important things to think about and maybe want to enjoy life more. When I see older people(over 55 say),I think they look happier.Never heard of an older person suffering from anxiety..maybe depression from being lonely but not like SA.Would be interesting to find out though.
