Is it even remotely possible to cure a fear of heights?

^^ Yes I think it's possible, with the right kind of desensitisation therapy, to become a lot less fearful of heights. I'm not an expert, so I don't know about a 100% cure. I've heard that specific phobias such as a fear of heights, spiders, or whatever is much easier to treat than complex phobias like social anxiety
Is a fear of heights something you suffer with D1662?

I'm thinking how glad I am that Halloween is out of the way for another year. I'm totally fed up with the relentless Halloween related posts on social media. I don't want to know about the 20 things you can do with a pumpkin. And the huge quantity of plastic Halloween tat filling up the shelves in the supermarkets was quite obscene. Also, what's with all the grown men and women in their 30's, 40's and 50's dressing up in scary costumes particularly if they don't even have young kids? When I was a child Halloween was just a low key event when, if you were lucky, you might get to wear a pointy hat as you roasted chestnuts on a bonfire at Cubs or Scouts. Now it seems like an excuse for adults to dress up like idiots and party. As I'm not invited, nor do I want to be invited, this shouldn't be allowed

Now Halloween's gone I suppose that means there will be shelf room for even more Christmas paraphernalia in the shops, urghh

Quite a few shops in the town nearest me organised a thing yesterday where they would be decorated inside and open in the evening for kids to visit them for trick or treating, which seemed like a better idea than annoying people by knocking on random doors. Although I've lived here for five years now and never had any kids try mine. Maybe they're all scared of me

Maybe it depends on where you live?

My rant about Halloween was a tad tongue in cheek. If adults enjoy celebrating Halloween then good luck to them
Perhaps I'm a little bit miffed that my SA won't allow me to join in with the fun. It's always at this time of year - Halloween, Christmas then the New Year - that I become especially aware of my non-existent social life

Yes unfortunately acrophobia is another one of my pitfalls
I currently only have 3 working lights in my workshop, out of a potential eight.
It's a nightmare now the nights are drawing in but the lights are suspended from the roof at 15 feet high which is well out of my comfort zone and I don't have anyone I can ask to pop up a ladder for me

^ What about your partner? Would he be able to climb up a ladder for you if you stood beneath to steady it? Or maybe you could ask a neighbour? There's certainly no shame in being afraid of heights, its something that a lot of us suffer with to some degree.

I think it's a pity to spend the many Autumn and Winter days ahead working in very poor light because you can't find someone to fix the 5 lights that aren't working. I'm sure, if you're desperate, an electrician would do it for you if you were prepared to pay the call out fee.
I hope you find someone to help you soon

Hi D1662,

I had a fear of heights and falling.

Like Avalon says desensitisation is one way and it certainly helped me.

This year I was on the end of a double ladder up a tree pruning it and on top of my roof fixing a leak and a broken tile.

I always have someone around when doing things like that and use PPE.

Like most of this MH ***, it is all about learning to do exacly the thing that we most want to not do. And we have to keep doing it otherwise we revert back.

I despise my sleeping patterns

Apart from having a healthier bank balance now, my student life was better on every single level.

Now full time dreary employment has broke me I just can't not wake up at 5am..ish, even on a weekend. Puts me in a right shit mood knowing I'm going to be tired by 10

^ It's looking at people's experiences of being or not being their 'authentic' or 'true' selves across different types of situation. It's not really an experiment in the proper sense as we're not inducing those experiences in people - we're getting them to recall a recent experience from their life that fits specific criteria and then answer questions about it.

There's not much research in the area, so should throw up some interesting stuff.

^ Nope - part of a research placement on the research methods master's I'm doing (which will hopefully lead to a PhD if I can settle on a topic and I'm not too shit).

Whether or not to use the open fire in my living room. I've never used it in the five years I've lived here and I don't think it was used for a while by whoever lived here before me either, so I'd probably need to get someone round to clean/service the chimney first, wouldn't I? I do like the smell of them when I'm out walking on cold mornings and I think it would be nice to have a fire of some sort. I suppose I could get the open fire replaced with a wood burning stove so it's cleaner and more efficient.

Definitely get your chimney swept if the fireplace hasn't been used for a while.
I personally love an open fire, it's strangely comforting to sit and watch the flames and listen to it crackling, sadly I don't live in a house with a fire anymore.

^ Needs to be swept probably.

Chimneys should be swept at least once or twice a year though depends on how often use them and what your burning. I love an open fire, miss it enormously.

I can't be sure of course but I think my neighybour, once again, has been tipped off about my complaint.
His mum was here and they went off. When he came back, he started with the music but it's pretty full on 30 mins or so of extreme extreme music and now really extreme roaring from gaming. It might just be coincidence but I do wonder....
Esp as I haven't heard back from my complaint, usually they contact you the next day, I did miss a private number but no voicemail was left (which they normally do).

He's got real anger issues. Maybe it's a good job the neighbourhood wardens are wanting to do a welfare check on me after all....
