This is a more personal one for me being from Sheffield, tho anyone who has seen THE FULL MONTY will have seen the hole in the road on the "sheffield, a city on the move" film at the start of the movie

This as i remember was one of the first casualties of the new alchopop culture.

Stopped being made by whitbreads in the mid 1990's when beer/larger started to go into decline as alchopops like hooch, castaway and then the big boys baccardi breezer & smirnoff ice started to take off. Although even the early alchopop of hoopers hooch is now also gone hoopers are still going and now make alcoholic ginger beer, lemonade & the rather nice dandelion & burdock.

Tho by no means the first or last beer/larger to fall i think this beer was a casualty of the 80's when larger was on the up

DISCLAIMER: I COULD BE WRONG ON MOST COUNTS DUE TO DRINKING TO MUCH OF THE STUFF BACK THEN.

Gosh, this thread is bringing back some wonderful memories

I remember staring at the test card too. It's only now seeing the test card here that I realise the 'woman' with the clown was actually a little girl! Can't believe we used to have only three T.V channels to choose from and we actually had to get up off the sofa to change over.

I don't know if anyone remembers the programme Pipkins? Anybody I've mentioned it to looks at me with a blank face. There was a Hartley Hare, Topov the Monkey, and Pig, among others. They spoke with Brummie accents. I used to rush home from school during the dinner break to catch it. Im 47, eek, so it was probably long before anyone here was born :

You dont seem to see many of them nowadays though, in fact I cant recall having one in several years. Perhaps they have all disintegrated and dissapeared since then.... Oh well I never liked the things anyway....

I can remember these paraffin lamps being used at roadworks.

I was rather fond of pinching them and getting up to all sorts of no good

Vinyl records, cassete tapes, VHS, film cameras; great nostalgia but, come on guys, they were absolute c***p compared to thier digital modern equivalents. And who would really want to go back to a world without smartphones! I'm 61, old enough to remember when there was only one channel availble for about half the day on your 9 inch black and white (well, sort of mouldy grey and lighter mouldy grey) tele. Stuff the 'good old days', I like it NOW!!!

Sorry i disagree vinyl for the reasons already stated in pevious posts by people, plus alot of moden dj's have even gone back to using records with a good number of groups releasing albums on vinyl as linited edition copies. Its not just about the playing quality its about actually owning something you can touch, the experience of shopping for your record, the album cover art, picture covers and best of all picture discs. As for film the digital is great for snap shot but it has taken away the skill and art of pictures. It took me years and many films testing out setting & exposure times to perfect my nightime photography now with a digital i can take a picture in the day, upload it onto my computer and alter it to make it look like night. With my flower close ups i needed extra close up lenses and the right exposure but with digital i can just stand there snap a flower upload to pc edit and cut just the flowers head then enlarge back to original size, no skill, no effort, no enjoyment.
As for the smartphone i would love to go back to a world where people actualy have time for eachother, will talk and do not walk around with a phone permanently on and attatched to them, i dont have one nor would i if you gave me one for free it would go straight on ebay. bah humbug

Changes that I didn't expect.

The move away from social solidarity to a more selfish individualistic society. I still can't believe people are that dumb, but the evidence from the last thirty years suggests otherwise.

The reversal of the trend towards class equality. As a kid I assumed that inequality would soon be a thing of the past.

The lack of progress towards space exploration. When I was little there was huge excitement about the moon landings and I thought Star Trek was a documentary.

The extent to which the internet would change the world. To my credit, when I first heard about it 25 years ago I did grasp immediately that it was going to be massive, just not how massive.

The death of high streets and local shops. Every time I see my parents we reminisce about long gone local shops. Every village had a shop, some had three or four.

The move away from nationalism. It was still rife when I was a kid. A throwback to the world wars which were a product of it anyway I suppose.

^We had that sort of thing. My dad made it and it took up an entire wall of the house. The speakers were separate though and were the size of arm chairs. Big was good in the seventies.
