Default Hair advice

So my hair is shoulder length and it naturally curls a bit at the back but not much at the front/middle, it's pretty darn straight there. So what I really want to know from anyone who knows this stuff, is what product should I use to curl it? I tried gel once but whilst it kinda worked my hair just went firm and felt horrible to touch.
So is there something that will look and feel natural but will still curl it? I've got a feeling if anyone answers it might just be ''no magical product exists''

You could get a ‘70’s perm’ . Fierce look if you can pull it off .
