Default 10 Common Phobias

1. Arachnophobia:

  • The fear of spiders.
  • This phobia tends to affect women more than men.

2. Ophidiophobia:

  • The fear of snakes.
  • Often attributed to evolutionary causes, personal experiences, or cultural influences.

3. Acrophobia:

  • The fear of heights.
  • This fear can lead to anxiety attacks and avoidance of high places.

4. Agoraphobia:

  • The fear of situations in which escape is difficult.
  • This may include crowded areas, open spaces, or situations that are likely to trigger a panic attack. People will begin avoiding these trigger events, sometimes to the point that they cease leaving their home.
  • Approximately one third of people with panic disorder develop agoraphobia.

5. Cynophobia:

  • The fear of dogs.
  • This phobia is often associated with specific personal experiences, such as being bitten by a dog during childhood.

6. Astraphobia:

  • The fear of thunder and lightening.
  • Also known as Brontophobia, Tonitrophobia, or Ceraunophobia.

7. Trypanophobia:

  • The fear of injections.
  • Like many phobias, this fear often goes untreated because people avoid the triggering object and situation.

8. Social Phobias:

  • The fear of social situations.
  • In many cases, these phobias can become so severe that people avoid events, places, and people that are likely to trigger an anxiety attack.
9. Pteromerhanophobia:

  • The fear of flying.
  • Often treated using exposure therapy, in which the client is gradually and progressively introduced to flying.
10. Mysophobia:

Oh god, i have five of those and a touch of a few of the others! I'd say that heights are the worst one for me though, my feet get instantly sweaty even just watching a film where some guy is hanging dangerously off of a ledge.

I don't like spiders or needles. Ok with the other things, apart from SA of course! Injections aren't too bad but I really hate blood tests. I love thunder and lightning.
The person I live with is worse with spiders than I am so I'm the one who has to deal with any spider incidents

They'd slip out of your hands anyway!

I think maybe in a previous life I was a mountain goat who never quite got the knack for it and fell to its death, or maybe the fear arises from my youth when me 'mates' used to torment me by always trying to throw me off high cliffs into rivers and lakes. Often times they'd not even check if the water was shallow enough or if there were rocks there. Also, amongst a few other scares, some kids once held me upside down off the top floor of the school, the thought of falling on my head petrified me and stayed with me until now.

Social stuff and flying, for me.
I'd rather face a pit of snakes, than walk round a town centre full of people.

I used to suffer from aibohphobia (a fear of palindromes) but regression therapy cured me of that.

I used to think that too. Until I started running into these chappies in my drying room.

I'm scared of spiders, heights and injections but I wouldn't say the fear is severe enough to call it a phobia. Like if someone said to me "let this spider run up your arm or I'll strangle this kitten" I'd let the spider. If they told me to give a speech infront of a room of people however I'd say **** the kitten.

My mum is very afraid of thunder and lightening but both me and my dad love it.

I have a phobia of spiders and the dark. The latter is great fodder for jokes and pranks, apparently this is one of those socially unacceptable phobias that is OK to pick on. Meh, I know a woman who has a phobia of peas. All irrational. Peas are tasty.

^ I don't think being afraid of the dark is silly, but saying that peas are tasty definitely is silly. If you don't mind me asking, do you sleep in the dark, or do you always have a light on?

I'm afraid of drunk people, but I don't think there's a name for that. Also, insects, all of them, especially moths.

^Oh yeah I'm afraid of drunk people too, lots and lots of bad experiences, although I wouldn't call mine a phobia but a healthy appreciation for the very real dangers of drunkard twats.

I do sleep in the dark. Being in the darkness in very familiar environments (like my home) is bearable, it's when I'm quite vulnerable like outside or in the woods when it gets dark. My mum has the same phobia so I'm sure she influenced me growing up.

Oi peas are yummy!

^ I suppose it depends on the specific drunk person, if it's someone I know it's probably not going to be such a problem. But if it's a stranger, or I run into drunk people on the street I'd be terrified. I guess you could put that under social phobia, since it's more a fear of a specific social situation.

I don't think the phobias of my parents contributed to mine, my mother is afraid of rodents, but I love them. I suppose my father being an alcoholic could have something to do with my problem with drunk people, and why I never drink myself.

No! No, you stop that now! Peas are not nice!

Social Phobia, Heights and Injections for me. Not all that great with flying either but can tolerate it for the sake of going somewhere good.

Arachnophobia, though it's pretty mild these days.
Also scared of the dark, but only if I wake up in the pitch dark - big time panic sometimes.

Thinking about it, I may not actually have social phobia. I think a phobia is defined as an irrational fear. I would say my fear of socialising developed because I was very quiet and incompetent at being social and due to immaturity said some wrong things. So socialising became humiliating and I became scared of the humiliation. So it's more of a rational fear really, but strict definitions never bother me too much though.

Well when they first started appearing I took that picture and sent it to an entomologist who said that if its quite hairy it could be a giant house spider which can on rare occasion give you a nasty bite similar to a bee sting.
