Thor 2 - 7/10
I'm sure it has a proper title not not just 2, but I can't think of it. Something to do with dark. Anyway, it was ok/fairly good, I wasn't a big fan of the first one despite enjoying looking at Chris Hemsworth. Loki once again stole the movie and it was only really the Loki bits that I enjoyed, that and seeing Thor mature. The rest of the characters were annoying, the villains pathetic. I'll watch it again, likely next time I do a Marvel movie marathon.

Silkwood - It features a young (and quite good looking) Meryl Streep, who plays a worker in a nuclear plant. It's not quite as boring as it sounds but it takes an hour to introduce the main plot and there's still another hour left after that point (which I didn't choose to watch). The scenery and characters' clothing are the best aspects. 6/10

The Deer Hunter 4/5 - Just as good, and just as long, as I remembered. The opening section set in the grimy steel working town goes on forever, but I haven't seen many films that so effectively capture a sense of place. I'm not sure if we are supposed to like the main group of characters as no-nonsense hard workin' decent American folk, but to me they came across as drunken boorish louts. If I had to live in that town, with those people, doing that job...I probably woulda offed myself long before heading to Vietnam

So, anyone up for some Russian Roulette?

Inside Llewyn Davis

New film from the Coens. A week in the life of a struggling folk singer in the 1960's folk scene in New York. Perhaps not as quotable as some of their other films but I found it stunning. Favorite film of the year so far. Brilliant. Perhaps The Grand Budapest Hotel later in the year can knock it off it's perch but I'm not so sure.

They were saying on the BBC film show how it should have lots of Oscar nominations. I haven't seen it but I like Coen Brothers films. Whats your favourite Coen brothers film?

I really like The Hudsucker Proxy, even though most critics seem to hate it. Barton Fink is pretty great too. Although I am not that keen on The Big Lebowski. Hmm, lets see, top 5:

1) The Hudsucker Proxy
2) Fargo
3) Barton Fink
4) Miller's Crossing
5) Raising Arizona

All 5/5 films

I expected it to get a few more nominations but it's a kind of 'fly under the radar' film. Best director woulda been nice. Top five? That's tricky. They're not infallible but have made some classics.

1-Fargo
2-No country for old men
3-The Big Lebowski
4-Raising Arizona
5-True Grit/Oh brother...

Sorry for the tie. I'm not happy with that list lol. Love A Serious Man too. Hudsucker Proxy good also. Not fussed for Burn after reading, Intolerable cruelty and the lady killers. All still watchable. I left off Inside Llewyn Davis from the list because the others have had repeated viewings so can't compare yet.

Prometheus- I really don't know how to rate it :/ I will say I enjoyed the experience and it held my attention. I think I really liked it but....I....lol. Hmmm.

Interesting list. I am still too aggrieved by the ending of No Country for Old Men. It felt a bit too clever-clogs. I want to see the final confrontation between the good guy and the bad guy!

I had the same experience with Prometheus. You enjoy it while you are watching it, then afterwards you think more about the actual plot, and realise that in fact it is utter rubbish. I call it Attack of the Giant Blue Space Jerks.

7 years in Tibet
Erm 6/10. Watchable having Brad Pitt in it, has a transformation of the main character and in perhaps similar way to the last samurai introduces a guy to a very different culture. (Buddhism)
But not a film that would have won any awards, and the 'Buddhism' element is quite light.
It does enough to show a brief introduction of the wisdom of a boy/man called Dalai Lama.

If it bleeds we can kill it

I thought the sequel was surprisingly good too. But the Alien Vs Predator films are all pretty rubbish and the belated second sequel, Predators, with Adrien Brody was just weird. And rubbish. But yes the original is a genuine action classic. Not sure I would want to watch it every day though

Prisoners 6.5/10

It was too long, I thought. It could have had half hour cut out of it and still got the message across. Though I did think Jake Gyllenhaal was brilliant in it - all mean and moody.

I just saw this film too. I don't often watch these police procedural film/murder investigation type films because I think they too often focus on the whole whodunnit aspect at the expense of character and plausibility. But I thought this film was excellent until towards the end when it just got a bit convoluted and confusing.

It was trying to be very Se7eny, Silence of the Lambsy in mood, which it achieved pretty well I thought.

Jake Gyllenhaal always does a good job but I thought his character was a little underwritten - he seemed to consist mainly of an odd manner of blinking and a pained expression.

I give it a generous 4/5.

Pacific Rim, 7/10.

Surprisingly and disappointingly there was a bit of a lack of giant mechas doing cool stuff, there was only 3 or 4 good scenes. I put it on because I wanted a big dumb robot movie, but it takes way too long to get to the big dumb robot stuff. I still enjoyed it though for the most part.

It's funny, I like Lars Von Trier's films, but I couldn't tell you what happens in most of them. All I remember is liking them for some reason. Aside from Antichrist, which is remarkable when you consider it features Charlotte Gainsbourg... doing stuff.

Yeah, that part was a wee bit schmaltzy and they probably could've left it up to the viewers' imagination who Lord Business was representing.

Amusingly, Fox News frowns upon the film. 'They believe this movie is going to make a lot of money, so no matter what they can embed these kinds of anti-capitalist messages and get away with it.' No hint of irony.

There's the bit in that where Kirsten Dunst had her top off (for some reason). And then there's Breaking the Waves, where Emily Watson prostitutes herself (for some reason). And Dogville, where everyone rapes Nicole Kidman (for some reason). I have Dancer in the Dark on the shelf ready to watch, so I fully anticipate seeing Bjork's nipples.
