Default 21st century life

ive been thinking quite a bit about the stresses we have to cope with in life these days that just surviing is no longer a simple thing we are told by society live this way or be cast out, is all this technology a good thing or is it killing who we are.

IMO We havent evolved enough to be able to cope with 21st centry life it wasnt long ago we were living in mud huts now we are force to live in thriving citys live stressfull lives nothings simple anymore what is it 1 in 4 people have mental health problems surely that a wake up call saying that some things wrong

look at the mental health problems in countrys like japan. people locking them selfs in rooms with computers and living there with no out side contact for years

so will it get worse as technogy advances?

I think it will.

Although, right now I really can't be bothered to explain why I think that. I may get back to you tomorrow on that one.

Yes of course, for one thing it promotes alienation and avoidance and may aggravate things like SA or Avoidance disorders by providing an easy route of 'escape'. Granted, sometimes the internet and technology are the only outlet for some, but it can also be used as an easy escape route.....i know myself that i sit in my room on the internet when i should be outside socialising and improving my SA.

Plus there is a certain 'status' anxiety about technology, like who has the best phone, laptop, gadget etc that could make the people who dont have these things feel inferior.....so it definatley aint helping mental health matters thats for sure....

I guess as with many things, some people can cope fine with urban 21st century life, and others can't. Sadly, everyone's forced to live in the same kind of society whether they are suited to it or not.

I'm hopeful in the future we'll realise some aspects of 21st century society aren't sustainable and perhaps changes will occur. There does seem to be a little more focus on building communities and if that continues people might feel less isolated/alienated, which I'd guess would help many of us.

I thought this and read this book on Victorian life, life has never been easy. But I do think the time we live in now is too nationalized rather than communitized. My thought was if all cars were banned that would be the solution. As people would walk to work making streets safer, areas could look a lot better than with concrete everywhere, it would make people more social and it would make local shops much more desired. However, it would also lead to a load of problems intially and really to be honest it would never be a reality.
