I never post here. I'm not sure why. Maybe I find this section a bit redundant. I could see the point if this was a standard chat room but it's not. We all have something in common. We are all looking for something. Whether it's a place to vent, to find empathy, sympathy, support or even just to be there for others. Age isn't really much of a factor here. Whether you're sixteen or sixty, it makes no difference. I suppose there may be the odd topic that only relates to the older poster that has a place here. Oh. I don't know!

^ actually I think age is highly relevant especially on the internet. I know full well if someone asks "Is there anyone here from Leicester?" if they are in their twenties they definitely dont mean anyone over 40. Age has a massive bearing in all other aspects of life whether friendships or relationships and its no different here. Shall I talk about arthritis and real ale?

If there's a section for people over 30 it seems appropriate that there should at least be one for those under 30.

^^how often do you post in this section?

I find most people come here to emote or chat about things relevant to most people.... Music, TV, films. Sure you can talk about arthritis if you want.

Lets face it anywhere where 30+ is considered old is going to be massively youth orientated. I can only think of professional football where 30+ is considered getting on a bit. Even if people do talk about films TV and music those over 40 are mostly likely going to like completely different types to those younger so wont relate as much. I certainly dont but then perhaps over 40 is different again. SAUK has never been that well used either even if it has lots of members so some sections are like watching tumble-weed. The groups often die off within days as nobody uses them which is a pity as I wanted to to do a photography and walking ones in the past but know its a waste of time.

The way i look at it its not just the topics it's more the way we look at them. Some topics could end up simular to those in the lounge but if for e.g. its a topic on films from the 70's in general the younger end will be looking at them retro and in some cases also for the first time. Older people on the other had will have memories to go with the film, when they saw it, was it with a childhood flame at a cinima, did they go to see it because they saw the actor on a chat show or was it just thier hero at the time. We also have personal memories of these actors who from the older era are in a lot of cases now dead, we might have had posters of them, known a little more of thier personalities from interviews and chat shows. So i see the club 30-81 as a place to descuse topics in more detail as memories, from a we were there and remember perspective and giving more of that type of info rather than just a discussion on how good the film was.
Of course it is very possible that it is only my warped old mind that looks at things this way

Edit: Hell my brain has started working for a change what all the drivell above is getting at is - I see the club 30-81 as a place to look back on a subject rather that the look now as in the lounge but the actual subject can be the same

I think there used to be a lot more young people on the forum hence the oldies were outnumbered. I think young SA folk most be on social media?

Holy smoke!
I hardly ever start threads (too shy/nervous) but one I must've started around the time I joined has been resurrected.
I still agree I must say.

I'm guessing the distribution curve for the age of SAUKers would be something like this, with the mode being mid 20s and the median about 30 years old:

My impression is that it was much busier 10 years ago, but this may just be because the forum hadn't been divided up into so many sections and everyone was posting absolutely everything in The Lounge. That made for a very busy and sometimes very hectic Lounge.

I can even remember a very, very long time ago when there was a youth subforum/section for the teeny weeny SAers which was sometimes quite busy during the daytime, but that was possibly because of 2 or 3 hyperactive teenage posters who may have had obsessive compulsive tendencies.

It's probably just that people don't use message boards as much as they used to. If anyone wants to discuss something now they'll tend to head to Reddit or Twitter (or even a Facebook group I suppose) than seek out a forum about a very specific subject. Those who have used them for years gradually drift away as they get older and their priorities change. It's a shame though, message boards have always been better for conversations.

I think some message boards have people of all ages, from 15 to 105. Many do drift away for whatever reason though. Sometimes it’s because of less than kind admin (NOT on here) or maybe the wrong people being blamed if there is a dispute. Of course it’s far more complicated than that. I don’t think that posting on a message board necessarily means “someone doesn’t have a life” - not that anyone was implying that. I’m not a fan of Facebook personally although I did play some of the games a while back...
