I've been on an SSRI for years and drink regularly. The only thing I have found is that it makes me more tolerant, so I can drink more

It said on my seroxats that I should not drink with them but I did - a lot! So I'm worried my liver will be knackered now. I always thought that you shouldn' drink with them as it either increases the effect of drink or decreases the effect of the meds. I dunno , does anyone know the proper reason why you shouldn't drink with SSRIs?

I'm on Escitalopram, which is closely related to Citalopram, but stronger mg for mg.

OK, alcohol is not advised when onthese drugs, but I have drunk on a wekend for 3 years on them and have been ok.

I drank the week I started on these meds and didn't react so well that time, but as the weeks went by I found I could have both without ant apparent negative effects.

I'd advise against getting hammered though. I've done this once or twice whilst on meds and went loopy both times. Other people have done so with no apparent problems though, so I suppose it comes down to the individual.

It's probably best to build up your drinking slowly and see how it goes. No doubt the best scenario would be not to drink at all, but if we are planning to do so anyway it's best to take it easy and see how things go than it is to get hammered and feel like crap afterwards.

I would definately advise you to take it easy...

I used to do CRAZY things when I was on citalopram and have blackouts etc...it seemed to make me crave alcohol more than when not on them (I had a similar problem with seroxat- and part of the reason I decided to quit SSRI's at least till worked on my booze problem)

However, I had a bit of a problem with alcohol before I went on them in the first place- most people I know seem to do ok on them, as the above posts confirm!

Enjoy yourself, but take it nice and easy!

Hello again,

Well I think I was okay. I didn't take it particularly easier than normal.

However I did have a mingin' hangover! Major headache all day.

Everyone reacts differently I guess and you should always consult with your GP.

Whenever I've drank alcohol when I've been on Citalopram I find that the drink effects me alot more and makes me feel like I've actually drank 2-3x more alcohol than I really have. Fortunately this has not been a problem for me as I only drink socially, and considering I don't socialise it's VERY rare that i drink once a year max usually.

I was on seroxat for years. and a very heavy drinker throughout that time, i had no real effects from drinking with them although its hard to say as after all that time i had to stop taking them. The side effects i suffered from seroxat was quite bad but all listed in the 'possible side-effects list' so i dont think it was the alcohol that caused them.
Citalopram tablets are weaker mg for mg against some of the other drugs of this type. However if you read the details you'll find most 20mg citalopram tablets are in fact 24.99mg citralopram hydromide. They only call them 20mg tablets as that is the realistic (effective?) dose of medicine from this tablet that gets released into your system.
I have been on other drugs since seroxat but with these i had even worse side-effects for the first 3 months and so they prescribed citalopram last week. They didnt want me back on seroxat because of the problems withdrawing from it last time.
I have to say it has been easier for the first week than most drugs Ive been on and i fully intend to try drinking on them. Tonight in fact.
My experience with drugs (medicines!) of this type has been to just carry on with your normal lifestyle (or improved lifestyle if they are helping) unless you actually start to feel there is a problem that may be linked to your drug and whatever you are doing while on them.
Of course thats only an opinion and realistically if anyone wants to know about what effects their drug may have then ask your doctor or search google for any 'valid' research.
Although asking here first is usually a good starting point as you know theres a good chance of someone having had some amount of experience with these drugs. (medicines!)

I took citalopram for a number of years a few years ago and i drank quite heavily on them and it didn't seem to have any bad effects on me.
I've also taken escitalopram (very similar to citalopram if not the same) for years too,did the same thing and it seemed OK.There's one thing i will say and according to my GP it reduces the effectiveness of the drug apparently.
It's all down to the individual really.

I've had the odd drink (glass of shery at my Mother in laws, what she always makes you have before Sunday lunch, bless, ha ha) and odd lager but generally I don't drink taking my tablets as before I ever got depressed and had anxiety, if I supped too much, my mood always did go down!

For me, it makes hangovers much worse. But worse than that i actually forget stuff that I do, adding to the embarassment of the morning after, or just making me annoyed that i don't remember doing cool stuff!

I think I've found out the hard way that Citalopram and Alcohol don't mix well for me. I'd been taking 20mg a day for 2/3 months and just recently moved up to 40mg a day. I usually only drink once or twice a week at the weekend but drink fairly heavily on those nights. I had been noticing my hangovers were worse when on 20mg. When I moved up to the 40mg i noticed that I was getting drunk noticeably quicker. I went over to a relatives house and over a number of hours (5 or 6) drank around 1.5 bottles of wine which is not an awful lot for me. I felt quite drunk and went off to bed and my aunt had noticed I was slightly disorientated but thought nothing of it. The next thing I know I came to in the middle of the night in the middle of a field in the pouring rain with no jacket and no idea where i was. I was a mile away from the house and no idea where i was trying to get to and why i was there. Luckily I had a phone and a friend was able to come and find me. But no more alcohol for me whilst on these tablets!

As soon as I started these meds I went t-total. (:
I thought it was a good idea as alcohol is bad for you anyways, and probably mess with he medication anyways.

But of course it's up to you after all, it's your life and your body.
Hope you choose the right desission.
