I sent you a private message quite a while back explaining how to fix this.

You may well have done /but all about 4 of my pms(all from dougella) seem to have been deleted. I'm not aware of having had a mass cull of such.

That's odd.

Try going to Settings, then General and unselecting Smart Punctuation.

I'll see if i can work out a server side fix for it tomorrow. Should be easy enough.

I'm assuming you're using a phone or tablet.

It's under Settings > General > Keyboard in this.

I use a laptop. Hardly ever used a smartphone(except one a granddaughter lent me for a short while. Just about managed to make calls) . Never used a tablet.

OK, I found I can't write a fix for the server as it would need to be added in a section of the admin panel that the admins don't currently have access to.

I did a lot of testing on windows 10 and was unable to replicate your issue, so I really have no idea why you are getting those smart quotes.

There does seem to be a workaround though. Instead of writing in the normal text box, click the "Go Advanced" button and type your post there.

Test it here to see if it works.

Just a test from Q-Reply.

***8211;***8221;***8217;

ETA: it seems to work OK for me from my stoneage device.

ETA: Now I have edited the post to add the above line it has broken.

It looks like editing the post trashes it for me.

The answer is to outlaw Unicode

My guess is there is some specific route that the text takes under specific circumstances that converts Unicode to 8 bit but fails to recognize the stuffed code at the other end and doesn't convert it back to Unicode and we see the stuffed form.

This problem looks like it will happen with Unicode from any source.

Trying some Unicode.

***8531; ***8532; ***8533; ***8534; ***8535; ***8536; ***8537; ***8538; ***8539; ***8540; ***8541; ***8542;

ETA: That breaks without editing. This smells like more than one bug.
