I'm really cherishing these older films; even though fictional it seems to me they authentically portray certain elements of time and place, social attitudes, and insights into being human.
Love the crisp diction and hearing regional accents that have all but gone now.
A very touching film.
I love Brief Encounter. Such a beautiful and endearing film.

Ten North Frederick on YouTube.

Oh my!

Marvellous performances from Gary Cooper, the beautiful Suzy Parker, Diane Varsi, and Stuart Whitman, and all the actors in a story that drew me in and a film that brought me several smiles, a gasp, and tears twice.

So glad I watched it.

Brief Encounter (1974) with Richard Burton and Sophia Loren.

I enjoyed seeing this film, in colour and with settings from the '70s that were familiar to me - the cars, clothes, home interiors.
Richard Burton was a delight to listen to;
Sophia is such a "Screen Goddess" I found it hard to see the character she portrayed.

Interesting to compare with Brief Encounter (1945) which I recently saw.

I think the earlier one is the better film.

Ghostbusters 2016

I gave it a 2 star on netflix, which is generous imo. The only parts I enjoyed were the cameos of the original characters. Dan’s line ‘I aint afraid of no ghost’ was the only bit that made me laugh.

^ You are good. I'd promised my Mum that I'd go and watch Mama Mia 2 with her this weekend. Praise be to the World Cup Final for putting and end to those plans.

"Don't think you're getting out of it though," she says. We'll go the following weekend.

Hopefully it's not on the following weekend. I would like to pay you to design a fake cinema website to say it's not on.

I've tried saying that it won't make sense because I haven't seen the first one.

Gah.. I'm not getting out of this

Jurassic World - 7/10

Of course it's not as good as the original Jurassic Park (I haven't seen 2 or 3 because I just know they would not be good). I thought the end was a bit silly and a bit of a coinkidink. But my main concern is WHERE IS JEFF GOLDBLUM?

Now I wonder if I can somehow persuade my Mum that she'd much rather see Jurassic World 2 at the cinema as opposed to Mamma Flippin' Mia. I could accidentally buy the wrong tickets. I could pay someone to don a brunette wig and pretend to be me in the dark, whilst I go and see JW2.

The Man Who Knew Too Much - 7/10. I often struggle to watch films from the 50s/60s and earlier, but Hitchcock films seem to be different, and more watchable. They often seem more modern than they actually are, perhaps showing how influential Hitchcock was. Also, some may disagree, but i've noticed strong female characters in the Hitchcock films i've seen so far, which seems odd for films from the 1950s.

The Hateful Eight - 8/10. I'm quite a fan of Tarantino films, and this was excellent. I wouldn't say its one of his best (Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained are possibly my favourites). It of course has lots of grotesque violence in it, but thats not the reason I like Tarantino films - its the characters, dialogue and music I usually find great in his films. Most of the film is in just one setting, which I'm not so keen on, but there isn't really another way the film could work. Anyway, it was really good.

Good Will Hunting - 8/10. A very good film, and I can see why its rated so highly. Its worth it for Robin Williams alone, although there are other well played characters including Will himself. I did find it a bit unbelievable that someone can be a gifted genius with absolutely no studying, but perhaps this can happen in real life (I will have to research this!) Its also great to think Affleck and Damon were relatively young when they wrote the script. Its made me really want Robin Williams as my therapist. So sad he is gone. I am really glad I watched it, and i've wanted to for ages. I'd only give films 9 or 10 out of 10 if I would watch it again, but now ive seen it I probably don't need to.

^ have you heard Tarantino is doing a film with Leo and Brad Pitt? Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

I known he’s a fan of Once Upon a Time in the West and America. It’s not a Western or a gangster film though; it’s about The Manson family.

Somehow I haven’t see The Hateful Eight! Must have busy/depressive at the time and then forgetful after! Also Good Will Hunting is excellent :D

^^Love Good Will Hunting! He did study and he also had a photographic memory!

Black Death 5/10, one of those camera wobblers which make me feel queasy! But worth it for Sean Bean, some grim scenes and Carice Van Houten.

The Disaster Artist 8/10 - perfect balance between heartwarming and ****ing hilarious. I'm glad it wasn't just a 'let's rip the pish out of Tommy Wiseau' party. I think it did him justice. What a brilliantly odd man.

Also Dave Franco is sexy AF, I would ****ing climb that.

Mama Mia: Here We Go Again

I give it six shits out of five.

Didn’t get it. It felt like it was never going to end. What was the plot?

It was worth enduring it though because it made my Mum so happy :D She was dancing at the end.

^ I think i'd need to be very drunk to watch that film!

Legend 7/10. A well made film, and both Krays excellently played by Tom Hardy. I'm interested in the history of the East End so that also got me quite interested.
While the film does accurately display what utter scumbags they are (rapists, murderers etc), part of me objects to films about them being made - it just adds to their notoriety. There seem to be a lot of people who idolise the Krays which I find ridiculous. I guess its a bit like those strange women who fall in love with death row prisoners.

Not quite as good as the original (which Id give a 9.5/10) but pretty decent nontheless.

^ I’ve never seen the original or the new one! They look good.

American Psycho - never seen it before because I thought it would be a horror and that it would give me bad dreams! What a strange film, but in a good way. 7/10

Suffice to say I gave up after fifteen minutes or so.
Not my kind of film at all.

latest Tom Cruise Mission Impossible thingy,....

I'd give it about,..7/10

good action shots and sequences, but seemed aimed slightly at kids or something

just something slightly missing,.. think it was a cross between Ronin, a (Daniel Craig)James Bond and John Wick or something, which isn't a bad thing, just seemed like there was too much non-stop action, and not enough camera shots of the amazing locations, and not enough 'down time' where the story ebbs a bit and you can take a breath.

The Bone Collector - I offered to put a film on for my Mum and she normally likes a romantic comedy (much to my dismay). But her love for Denzel saved the evening. 7/10 it was pretty decent. I haven’t watched a crime film in ages. I don’t think they’re even called crime films.

was angelina jolie terrible in that? i think i remember seeing that deep in the mists of time and thinking "her job in this is to have big lips and look pathetic and scared a lot", thats quite a high level of sentience for 90s Kev so it must have been pretty obnoxious

All The Money In The World. I may need to watch it again but I'd give it a tentative 8/10. I was distracted somewhat by Christopher Plumber not being Kevin Spacey
(Tho Plumber was great)

This may be the only Mark Wahlberg film that I've enjoyed him in (Ted and possibly Boogie Nights being the only other exceptions I can think of off the top of my head) generally speaking I find him an annoying twat but I have to concede he was good in this.
