Curry showdown
What's the best curry?
Any curry from any cuisine accepted, apart from korma because I don't want to have to bully anyone. |

Re: Curry showdown
Every Thai curry. Penang is slightly above the rest.
Saag. Who doesn't want to eat something that looks like it's been skimmed off the top of a pond? Any curry with prawns. |

Re: Curry showdown
I've never eaten a curry that wasn't a ready meal, and I've never gone more exotic than a tikka masala. Not proud.

Re: Curry showdown
I'm fond of a Jalfrezi myself (vegetarian only ofc) - hot but not ridiculous. I want a few functioning taste buds left.
It's nothing without some pilau rice, a peshwari naan, maybe some bombay potato and some samosa or bhaji for starters. I can skip the poppadoms. |

Re: Curry showdown
I always used to love making a Thai green curry using uncle Ben's sauce,
Annoyingly, they no longer seem to make it, I sometimes make a chicken curry, which I love putting sultanas and raisins in, for that little bit of sweetness in the mix,. No idea what type of curry that would actually be tho' It's just home made, throwing various bits of veg in, with a good dollop of mild curry powder. |

Re: Curry showdown
^ Oooooh - everything is better with chickpeas. I had a crushed chickpea starter thing somewhere a little while ago I can't remember the name of and Google isn't helping. It was mixed up with chilli, coriander and spices and I think is usually served as a snack/street food. It was soooooooo good.
Also, yes to the dahls. Tarka dahl is too good. |

Re: Curry showdown
My vote goes for the Thai variety. The combination of sweet, fishy, lime-y, and fiercely hot flavours is so good.
It's quite the faff, but a good Massaman curry with freshly made coconut milk is delicious indeed. |

Re: Curry showdown
^^ yumm that does sound good, the mystery chickpea starter.
Sri Lankan curries are really tasty. I had a pineapple curry a while back and it was delicious. Also lentil Sambar with aubergine. ^ I've never tried a Thai curry before. |

Are there fish options? Do I make it at home or go to a restaurant? |

Re: Curry showdown
^ Yep. And they're great with a load of veg bunged in. If you want to try one at home I reckon this would be a good bet: https://www.thai-food-online.co.uk/c...e86e3bec&_ss=r
You'll get about 20 portions out of it, it lasts ages, and all you have to do is fry it for a bit, bung in some coconut milk and then chuck in your veg. There are even instructions on the side. They do a range of them and I think the one above is least spicy but is still very nice. You can get some of the others in ASDA but it looks like they don't have that one. I currently have 3 different ones in the fridge as they're great for a relatively easy meal. The green one blows your head off. |

^^ Yes, there are lots of fish and seafood options. Maybe go to a restaurant, to see how tasty Thai cuisine can be? : )

Re: Curry showdown
Pathia.
But as with everything, it depends on the chef. Some can make it a bit sickly sweet. But find the right chef and it's a winner every time. Great with okra. |

^ are you curry-trolling?
I had a shorshe murgi (mustard chicken curry) yesterday for the first time. It was gooooood. It's going to be added to the curry rotation. |

Once I visited a Gurdwara and was invited to Langar, which is where food is served free of charge to anyone.

Re: Curry showdown
Ahhh this is a hard one!!! I think I'd say that Japanese curry is my favourite. It's so delicious and also very easy to make with plenty of leftovers.
Otherwise I do love Thai curry (any type really). To be fair though, I need to try more variety. Where I'm from curry isn't as hugely popular. There's a higher presence of east Asians who live in Oregon compared to South Asians. My mother in law (who's Bengali) makes really good curry too, but they tone down all the spice so I can't fairly say much about that. I like a little bit of spice usually. |

^ We have one of those in Cardiff! I've only been once but loved it. They had some really nice starter-y things I'd not had before. Need to go back.

Re: Curry showdown
^ My mum struggles with curry because of her IBS. She lets herself have it every month or so because she says it's good for a 'good clear out'.
^^ I knew my Korma senses were tingling that night for a reason. |

Re: Curry showdown
Lmfao that’s exactly what my mum would come out with. Ugh such graceful Grace Kelly’s that raised us.
Well I don’t feel licensed to commenting in this thread as someone who has only eaten supermarket branded curry’s. I’ve tried most of the vegetarian ones. Jalfrezi and Bombay is probably my go to (in any brand). I tried Mindful Chef (dreaded korma) recently which was my first time eating black rice (never heard of it before). It was, overpriced (or maybe fairly priced given the cashews and today’s prices) but the rice was pretty good considering it’s outward appearance. I may have to start branching out to proper curry’s for a good clear out. |
