Went to pump the tyre up on my buggy so I could run this morning and managed to destroy the inner tube :-\ hoping the light holds out long enough for me to go out in about half an hour. It'll only be a short one as I've been really lazy with the running recently so need to build it back up.

So i got one of those weighted vests and tried it today... i'm absolutely pooped! I walked my usual South Downs walk, which is around 75-80mins worth, with two big inclines and a few mini ones. It was a bit brave, but i took the whole load without deducting any weights - 20kg's, which is a fair whack, but i managed alright. The vest was superb, with smart design and good weight distribution and - more importantly, it was comfortable.

Gonna feel it tomorrow, though :/

^ Weight vests probably aren't suitable for sex, but you can give it a try, some positions may work better than others - there may even be a site dedicated to it!

Yea, they are a bit pricey - you could try gumtree or local ebay if you're up to that(?), there's always someone who buys that sort of thing on a whim, uses them once and then they end up in the garage or someplace. You could even make your own.

I exercise a lot nowadays. It greatly helps with the depression, in that it takes my mind off it to some degree.

Because of this, I'm now about 210 pounds with a low body fat %. It's quite great how far I've come and the progress I've made. I could barely do 5 push ups when I started, but now I usually do 100 every day, combined with other bodyweight exercises, as well as isometric exercises, which are fantastic for strength (not so much mass gains if you use them conventionally).

Anyway, it just shows how important determination is in realising your goals, and also how those goals are within your grasp if you stick to it.

Nice one Z, but it only seems like only five minutes ago that you swigging ten pints and destroying bed slats and chairs with a high body fat percentage.

Oh I still swig many a pint, and it isn't really helping (I'm not going to give it up either ) but I've lost a lot of body fat. I've just noticed that I've said a "low" body fat. When I read into it, a low body fat is classified at about 10% or less. I'm around 15% I think, but it's an improvement, but not really "low".

I've been mainly eating one meal a day in the evening, and during the day I've just been having snacks (fruits, nuts, ritz etc.)

Contrast that with what I did not so long ago: 4 meals a day and so on.

That diet plan by the way isn't really suitable for everyone. It's kind of hard at first to maintain.

Well done mate.

I worked out religiously for a couple of years when I was younger, lifting weights, but shit got in the way in the end.

It was the best I'd ever felt but it's hard for me to do exercise like that anymore.

It has to be fun for me to do it now.

Just been on the news that Just Eat could be in real trouble. Now I know why.

You can put Fosters and Bud out of business next.

Oh don't worry, I don't think I'll ever give up Just Eat, Fosters and Budweiser They are the fuel of life.

I'll just have to start having 9 pints instead of 10 from now on

lol

I think your goal should be to have a few on friday and saturday night and a Just Eat on those nights too.

The people that can manage that and look after themselves on week days have got it sorted.

I managed to do it for a few months but went back to drinking and eating like a pig every single day again.

Need to go back to just eating what I wan't on weekends now I've eliminated booze from my diet.

I bought that about half a year ago. It's a great book. It's effective because it incorporates isometrics into the mix as well.

You can ignore the chapter on penis enlargement though

Pressups is my current thing, i can't be arsed with free weights and the like right now. Also, pullups but i'm not finding any consistency with those.

I've found four methods with the pressups: wide, incline, diamond/close hand and fists. I can manage 40-45 to start with, then either two following sets of 30 OR 25-20-15 with short rests between. I don't mix the methods up, it's always around 100 on one stance before i go on to the next.

Yeah, i don't know why i'm posting this - maybe someone may advise me on a better way to do things - i also want to document my progress, i might post monthy.

I'm looking for some form of fitness which has a social element to it. I've thought of gym classes and yoga but it seems like people just go to the class then leave straight after with little socialising involved (fair enough). Dance classes are too intense, I went to one and absolutely hated it. Any suggestions?

^ I find gym classes the most sociable. I rarely attend the gym now. If you make an effort to talk to people they will generally respond.

I love classes. I could go to 7 a week if I had the time. My favourites are body pump, aerobics, and boxing classes.
Since moving I'm going to change my gym to one more locally.

In the past Ive been a bit of a council gym snob.

I’m a relative beginner to weight lifting. Determined to bulk up, going to be using Greyskull LP program to focus on progressive overload with compound lifts.

Anyone else bulking up?

All forms of exercise make you feel good, definitely make you want to sleep at night. What I haven't seen in this thread is any insight into why; a) moving your life in a more valued direction, meeting your need to status & b) it simply makes it easier to believe the good bits about yourself.

Wonderful as exercise is, I fear a lot of people have got this idea that it's a chore, something that has to be endured, to 'make themselves less a loser' vs. 'I'm great but this will add to it'. I fear a lot of the motivation comes from the former idea which is a reason why people don't keep physically-active; note I use 'physically-active' instead of 'exercise', there's a good reason.

Now people might see exercise as a 'chore' (possibly not helped by bad memories of PE lessons), this is what needs to be turned around. Shouldn't there be more focus on getting over these obstacles? This is why I think the emphasis on running and gyms is doing a poor job of reducing obesity. Physical activity is so much broader than this and there is so much more than that.

Can't help but throw in thoughts.

Went for a 750 stroke row today (around 7k) but my left leg went numb and I got bad pins and needles, so had to stop around 4.5k. Disappointing really, as I think I had the row in the bag.

Think I need to start daily stretching again.

Update: Stretched a bit, got back on for another 5k, so feeling happier now.

I've been feeling less anxious since I started back at the gym but am wondering what the optimum dose of exercise is for the best results?

As much as I'd like to spend all my time in the gym, I have other stuff to do!

What are your experiences?
I've found the most helpful thing to me is going for two daily walks (an hour at 7am and then an hour at 4pm). I'm not sure if it's because of getting fresh air, being out in the countryside, being exposed to sunlight, spending time away from screens, listening to music/podcasts with my full attention or not listening to anything at all, or a combination of some/all of these things. I go to the gym a couple of times a week and exercise at home in between, but I've found that on the occasions I haven't been able to do my daily walks for a few days I've felt anxious, sad, lethargic, irritable, etc, yet if I haven't gone to the gym or done any other exercise for a few days I don't really feel any different at all. I'll still always do the latter just to stay fit, but I don't seem to get any mental benefit from it like I do from walking (but the benefit is probably from the things that come with it, not the movement itself).

Not at all, no The room with all that stuff in at the gym is always packed so I avoid it, but it doesn't really appeal to me anyway. I do have some small dumbbells here that I use sometimes but I mostly do planks, sit ups, crunches, etc, at home.

Anything that gets your heart beating fast and get you out of breath in a short amount of time.
Out of breath to the point, as they say, where you can no longer hold a conversation.

So stuff like burpees

Mountain cllmbers

Lunges

Star jumps, squats, skipping, etc

5 mins a day every day and then increasing by 1 or 2 minutes a day as your body begins to handle it
Plus you'll sleep loads better too
