Default Avoiding work outings

Anyone else avoid work outings because of your social anxiety? I volunteer and I was asked the other week to go to a party and a Christmas dinner. I said no to both because of how uncomfortable I'd be there. And i also have bad ocd to go with it so i wouldn't be good at eating food strangers have cooked. :*( I really wanted to go but I'm sad I always say no. a couple of the people i work with also asked me if i was going and sounded a bit sad when i said no too. Much as i want to make friends my stupid fears won't let me .

Yes - if it involves larger groups I avoid social stuff like that, regardless of the context. I find it far too stressful, although I like to think maybe one day I could deal with that sort of thing, but I think that’s a long way off!

And then there is the feeling of isolation because I can’t deal with social events....

Yeh, it's totally understandable. If it's a situation where you feel like you will be uncomfortable and it's almost like torture then why would you happily go along.

It's almost illogical to go but yeh, to go would be to face your fears and apprehension.

Already?!

We went to the casino last xmas, we tried to book the restaurant for a sit down meal in July ..it was already full

As for avoiding work outings, I've been at this place for 6 xmas now, Before when we were a bigger company it was more formal and I absolutely hated them, I went but had to sneak away early. Now theres only about 8 of us (don't even invite the ones we don't like) and just go for a piss up/casino/meal ..I don't mind so much. If there were 20-30 of us I don't think I'd go no!

sod christmas outings, see them enough in work. Don't really want to see them outside of work.

Fortunately in my job we don't do "do's", I have been to one or two in the past but I found them far too stressful, I can't think of anything worse than being somewhere trying to look like your enjoying yourself, when all your thinking about is how long can it be before I can leave.

I regularly avoid all manner of office after hours social occasions. When I have done them in the past my anxiety levels have hit the roof and I have usually just wanted to get away as soon as possible!

Me

These are honestly the hardest situations for me anxiety wise. I avoid as many as I can and if I do have to go I worry about it for weeks. I actually left a job because they wanted me to organise the work Christmas party!

I hear you about feeling sad after saying now, viscous cycle of saying no then regretting it.
