Are you posting the link straight into the post without doing anything else? It should work if so.

I noticed that there were extra image tags mixed in with the link.

i copied the linky out of photobucket, started a new post, clicked on insert image and pasted the link, when i preview i got the red cross.

Just post the link straight in. No need to use the insert image thingy

Yeah, never used it myself. I think that's where your problem was. If you use the IMG link in photobucket you don't need it
