People saying 'I'm going the shops' or similar. Is it too much effort to place a to in that sentence?

"Basically" being imposed on the beginning of a statement. "Basically I told him it wouldn't work" "Basically it's down to you" "Basically I called the police" etc.

'Pregnant' is one word in particular that I hate! 'Expecting' sounds much nicer.

I'm not keen on most Americanisms but one or two in particular really get on my nerves. "Cool" is one that comes to mind.

And I'm in total agreement with Halfemptyglass - people who say "..should of..." instead of the correct ".... should have.." drive me mad too!

A new grammatical contraction that seems to be frequently used in the UK these days and that drives me round the bend, is: "I've not..."

Examples:

"...I've not got the money to ...

"...I've not been on holiday yet...."

"...I've not seen my mate for weeks...." etc, etc.

instead of the old contraction: "...I haven't

"...I haven't got the money to ...

"...I haven't been on holiday yet...."

"...I haven't seen my mate for weeks...."

Phrases:

I totally agree with Kastra, "I could care less!" drives me mad too!! As she mentioned, it doesn't even make sense!!

'No brainer' I don't get that either. Does it mean something which is stupid, or a person that is thick [hence 'no brain']?

There are other words and phrases that boils my 'p*ss' but I can't think of them at the minute.

Oh yeah.. I hate: "..boils my p*ss!"

A no-brainer is a decision where the correct course of action is so obvious that it doesn't require the use of one's brain at all.

Reminds me of when people overuse the word 'literally'.

I was LITERALLY just minding my own business...

We LITERALLY ran across the field...

That's not really chav. That's more urban ghetto. Chav's wouldn't know how to speak like that. I guess you could say they are just a different type of chav though being more influenced by black culture.

I hate 'basically' and 'literally'. Every time I find myself using it I want to slap myself. Unnecessary adverbs or adjectives really annoy me, especially at work when people waffle on in long paragraphs when they could use bullet points.

The other variation on this is 'aint' : I aint got time or I aint got the dough or I aint got nuffin. Ugh slipped another pet hate in there, replacing 'th' with ff : nuffin, sumffin -

Gosh we're a bunch of grumpy grammarians:

I don't like it when someone describes an inanimate object as "sexy" like that car is sexy. :/

'that is sick' (in reference to something good)

Is it? Is it really sick? IS IT? I hate that word used in that context.

'I had a brain fart'

That just sounds too crude, I don't like.

The word 'awesome' kind of annoys me. And 'classic' when used like 'that's classic'.

Grammatical errors don't annoy me much at all, because I am Yorkshire and speak and write with loads myself

I've just read some of the other posts on here, and while that I myself use quite a few of these, like I do say 'I've not seen that film' (but vary between saying I've not, I haven't, and I 'ant), I say 'init', 'basically', 'at the end of the day' a lot... but then I've not (haha) heard of a lot of these words? I can't be with it can I?

Yes, that one has always struck me as particularly ridiculous.

The word "Anywho." Im guessing its an extremely annoying misuse of the word "Anyway". Seems to be used by people who think theyre being clever. Capable of triggering homicidal tendencies in people who know better.
