The Royle Family my arse. Take that back, or I will force your head into Jim Royle's stinky arsecrack and encourage him to let one off. To my mind The Royle Family is one of the best comedies - actually one of the best tv programmes - I have ever seen. Watch "The Queen of Sheba" and tell me it isn't both funny and moving.

The early and late episodes of Red Dwarf are almost unwatchable, but in its mid-run it had some brilliant series that mixed clever science-fiction plots with great comedy.

Still I can see that Red Dwarf's style would not appeal to everyone.

I agree about Family Guy. Well, it is far from the worst sitcom ever, but I don't get its appeal. Its like the Simpsons without the heart and humanity; South Park without the intelligent satirical intent. The manatees thing in this episode of South Park is spot on:

And let's not forget Love Thy Neighbour and Mind Your Language.

Programmes like these basically sum up everything that is wrong with 21st Century Britain (Ok, perhaps a slight exaggeration).

It wouldn't be so bad if people watched these shows to laugh at the people on them. However, many viewers, particularly impressionable teenagers, seem to idolise them and wish to be like them, and I have no idea why!

I guess it's because the "popular" types get what they want out of society by acting the way those "celebs" do. With all the nightclubbing and flaunting themselves about.

Even in my bloody dentists, they have those types working there. Thanks for not making me feel less nervous than I already am!

yeah,. I'd agree with that,.
it's actually been quite depressing viewing seeing awesome characters getting systematically written out of the series till there's not really anyone left you actually care about

not sure, but I've heard tell of some formula for writing "watchable" TV series involves disappointing the viewer and basically creating depressing foreboding storylines,.. negativity sells, apparently.

There was a really great web series that Jerry Seinfeld did called Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. I especially liked the matter of factness of the title and think it should be applied to all shows. The Only Way Is Essex could be called Insufferable Rich Kids being Shitheads, or alternatively Terrible Actors Pretending They're on a Reality Show.
