I have just watched I, Daniel Blake it would touch the hearts of anyone, even people who have a heart of stone.

^ It would. The absolute horror of it is that it's based on real stories.

^^ Yes, I also watched ‘I, Daniel Blake’ newbs. It was incredibly moving but the saddest thing is that this is exactly how it was/is for so many people
I know from my own dealings with the DWP what a humiliating and demeaning experience it can all be

I seem to have fallen back into a perpetual state of anxiety, I think some of it is related to worrying about my health but mostly it relates to the fact that I have to make some big decisions about things before they are made for me.

Dunno. There's something about Monday's, maybe the volunteering at the FC that seems to make me a bit meh.

Ta for all the responses

I guess were all just keeping busy as a distraction

My patience has gone right out the window though, I really don't know if I need to get a new job, this is so damn stale and depressing, its a lot of stress for not a huge return. I suppose having a death in the family just makes me think of how short life is and that I feel like im bloody wasting mine (mostly at work) but theres really not a damn thing I can do about it, I have no idea how anyone does anything on weeknights! I'm ready for bed by 7

I'm an idiot. I said I'd go visit an old friend in Manchester and now I've left it too late and the trains are really expensive. I'm getting really anxious about it for no good reason. I should probably cancel but I'd feel like an a-hole for doing that.

Stressed and jittery, for no reason at all. :-(
I think I need to quit the caffeine intake.

^ Me too, although I’d really miss my mug of PG in the morning. I’d rather drink my old bath water than have decaff.

If you don’t mind me asking, how much caffeine do you consume in a day Al?
I hope you feel less stressed and jittery as the day wears on

^ thanks, I drink too many cans of Diet Coke a day, I don't even like the stuff. I am not having any today but I just feel like I want to curl up in a ball under my desk.
I'm feeling quite low and miserable, I hate January and I'm not really looking forward to anything at the moment.

I always order a Diet coke if I drink out. I don’t know why because I’m not that fussed about the taste either. I guess I’m addicted to the caffeine or the sweetners or both.

I’m sorry you are still feeling so low So many of us seem to be struggling physically and/or mentally at the moment. I think January and the lack of daylight is so depressing. Roll on Spring!

I’m feeling like I can’t stand yet another night of insomnia. The hours drag by so slowly. I hate the darkness and the silence of the night - there’s something very oppressive about it. It’s only when the birds start to sing and a chink of early morning light peeps through the curtain that I feel I might actually be able to sleep

Troll.

I just worked out, they stole 72 weeks* of my life from me over the last three years and that doesn't even account for VAT. Absolutely disgusting. What did I get for it? My bins emptied.

*40 hour weeks

I'm not trolling, I genuinely think people should be pleased that they've contributed to everyone being able to use the NHS and see a GP and go to a state school and call the police or the fire service or an ambulance if they need to And you'd be in some trouble if no-one emptied your bins!

It’s good to see you posting again, Ichigo, although I’m so sorry that you are feeling so awful

I think a lot of people here are suffering with the January blues, myself included, although tbh it feels like mine covers the other 11 months of the year too

Year 10? Is that 14/15 year olds?!

I hope the day goes smoothly and is nowhere near as stressful as you fear. Wishing you lots of good luck x

Just because you haven't directly used some the things taxes pay for (though you have most certainly benefited from more than just rubbish collection), you still benefit substantially from living in a country that has the services, infrastructure and institutions paid for by tax.

As well as the things Dougella has listed, taxes also pay for the development and maintenance of transport infrastructure, the judiciary, subsiding industry, the police, the armed forces, research and development in areas without obvious profitability, various economic functions institutions and so on. Without a mechanism like taxation to pay for many of these common goods, we likely wouldn't have them - private industry most certainly wouldn't have paid for them, and if they did we'd end up paying far more for them (see analysis of practically every privately-run enterprise that fulfils functions paid for by states elsewhere).

Where exactly do you think the country would be if we never had these things? Subtract each of them one by one and imagine the country you're left with. Without roads. Without police. Without education. Without healthcare. Without the legal system. Where would you be? I think you'd rather have paid those 72 weeks' worth of tax.

And thus ceases my 'leftist propaganda' for the week.
