^ Cliches often get disregarded because they are overused, but I agree, they are overused because they often hold the most truth.

Re: Inspirational quotes/sayings etc
I'm not usually one for quotes, but every now and then, I'll see a quote that resonates with me, like this one -
It's a hard one to accept, no-one wants to experience pain and distress, but I'm trying to remind myself that it is absolutely correct, life is never without its struggles, pain can't be avoided and you can either try and reject and avoid that pain (like I've done most of my life), or you can accept it and use it to grow and strengthen as a person. |

Re: Inspirational quotes/sayings etc
An excerpt from the Dalai Lama's book I was reading on holiday, something that I believe is important for a lot of people on here (including myself) who spend a lot of our lives wishing things were different in our lives and thinking about what we don't have in our lives and being severely miserable because of it and feeling hopeless and disillusioned because of it.
Quote:
I'm sure many are cynical about much of what the Dalai Lama and other wise guru types say, and I was up until very recently too, but I do genuinely believe he is right here, we can't be reliant on external and often impermanent factors for our happiness, whether that be in a material sense or a friendship/relationship sense, which is what I've been doing for years now, thinking I could only be happy if I had a partner and loads of friends. We can grow tired of materialistic things eventually and always desire something better or something we can't afford, and friendships and relationships can come to an end at any moment for any number of reasons. If we get too attached or reliant on these things, then we really suffer if we lose them and that's partly why Buddhism of course places so much emphasis on relinquishing attachments to material possessions. It may be seen as a bit of an airy fairy thing to say (my dad calls it gobbledigook without thinking), but there's a reason why so many wise guru types like the Dalai Lama and Eckhart Tolle say that happiness comes from within ourselves, there is a lot of truth to it, I guess deep down I've always known this, just only recently have I actually come to truly understand it and believe it, and reading about Mindfulness and Buddhism on my recent holiday to Sri Lanka (a Buddhist country) has really opened my eyes. I'm just trying to stay open-minded to Buddhist principles (I even purchased a Buddha statue there which is sitting on my bedside table ) and not let the cynical and unnecessarily negative side of my brain get in the way too much at this point. |

Re: Inspirational quotes/sayings etc
^ Yes, useful stuff. The trouble is of course, the more identified you are with being a person - a separate, individual entity called "me" - the more difficult it is just to observe the passing thoughts as 'other' than you, because you're so utterly and intimately involved with them!
So how do you get around this problem? By realising that even the thinker itself is just another thought! That there is no separate, autonomous thinker called "me", but just thoughts themselves; which are merely images appearing in mind, born from memory of 'the past' and anticipation of 'the future' - both of which are just thoughts also! At this stage, you either start to feel worried and concerned, or liberated and excited, depending on how strong your ego is - ie. how closely identified you are as a person. And the great thing is, we all have that choice in life. |

^ But who wants to spend their life making sacrifices?
The flip side of that quote is surely even better news for us? Which is... If you don't want anything in life, there's no need to sacrifice anything. |

TENSION IS who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are. - Chinese Proverb

Nothing you do will change you,
For you need no change. Don’t try to reform yourself; Just see the futility of all change. Do not expect the changeful To take you to the changeless — It can never happen. Only when the very idea of changing Is seen as false and abandoned, The changeless can come into its own. - NM - |

Stop wandering about! You aren't likely to read your own notebooks, or ancient histories, or the anthologies you've collected to enjoy in your old age. Get busy with life's purpose, toss aside empty hopes, get active in your own rescue - if u care for yourself at all.....and do it while u can.
