Default What book you are currently reading?

I'm engrossed in Sebastian Barry's book "The secret scripture" It's a lyrical and energetic book set in troubled times in Ireland.

I'm reading this which I picked up from a charity shop for £1 :

It's ok, nice light reading for the moment. Makes me feel glad I'm not a teacher.

I was half way through Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky but I misplaced it a couple of days ago and can't seem to find it.

i just read last and first men by olaf stapledon. certainly one of the most "worthy" books i've ever read, and a fcking good read. well done, human race, for bearing such fruits as stapledon and his great book!

its hard for me to say what is more worthy though, a good philip k dick, which often engages me so powerfully on so many levels, and so is in a sense a sort of psychological marvel, whereby an author manages to conjour a magical net of tendrils out of words and paragraphs, tendrils which reach out of the pages and probe tenderly yet masterfully between your brain's tense noodles, taking root deeply in your fleshy emotional heritage, only to upgrade your consciousness so that you can marvel from outside at your own mind glowing white hot as if your brain were a marvelous labyrinthine network of tungsten filaments holding you in thrall with luminous primordial beauty and electric-vivid marvellous terror, while also inducing an existential lingering ache like a sickening kick in the balls from the grim reaper himself, OR, a book like stapledons, which seeks to advance the human condition to further and further extremes, lingering on giddy plateaus for millions of wondrous years, and finally probing at the poignant possible ends of our cosmic residence.

i guess stapledon wins for ideas, but dick wins in execution. so i read both and have a win-buffet

next in line is is either a philip k dick book or stapledon's other meisterwerk, star maker, but i'm saving them both for when i'm on holiday.

Though I don't generally read horror, I'm currently embarking on a Richard Laymon 2-in-1 volume, consisting of Beware! and Dark Mountain. It was only 99p in Aldi.

I've read another of his, Funland, about eight years back, remember it being quite good, there was (he's dead) a slight element of tongue-in-cheek in his writing, and his use of gore was deliciously extreme in comparison to most of his contemporaries.

History of Western Philosophy by Bertrand Russell.

Despite having the attention span of a dead person, I'm doing quite well (for me). I've read just over 150 pages in 6 weeks...

P.S. blame Call of Duty.

I've been out of a reading frame of mind lately, strangely for me - so still reading a couple of chapters of A Spot Of Bother by Mark Haddon before I sleep. Next is either American Pastoral by Philip Roth, Timequake by Kurt Vonnegut or Never Let Me Go by the guy whose name I can't remember

Yeah I really like Douglas Coupland! Not read Gum Thief yet though. Think Girlfriend In a Coma and Microserfs are my favourites of his. Microserfs would be funny to read again in this day and age!

^ I've read Catcher In The Rye, it's one of those books that tends to polarise opinion, in my experience. The protagonist isn't the most likeable or endearing, but you feel an almost uncomfortable kinship with him (at least, I did!). An interesting book and always worth reading.
