The Independent has a good article on it giving timings and explanations.

Now called the Supermoon apparently, I assume for much the same reasons why the super devil was so named versus the normal everyday devil.

Everything is supposed to portend the end of the world. And when it doesn't, its acolytes suddenly become metaphorical and say this or that part has ended. Like the Millennium Bug, 2012 (ancient Mayan prophesy), alcopops and too many others to mention.

They only need to get it right once, but sadly for them there will be no back slapping and congratulations to follow, so it's really a pointless exercise in any case.

The moon, from where i'm viewing, is spectacularly white at the moment - it's hard to distinguish any 'marks' (you know what i mean).

Is it OK to look at the moon with binoculars? I wanted to before but was a bit worried about brightness.

The light from the moon won't damage your eye's like the sun would, it just hurts a bit because its so bright and you are out in the dark. You can get lunar filters but this just helps you to see more detail of the moon not safety reasons. Hope this helps.

Yup, I missed the eclipse because I was dumb enough to only read one newspaper's account (why would I need to read several newspapers to learn the timings?). The link to the Independent (apparently a 'serious' paper) was completely wrong. I have the print-out in front of me and it says: "The lunar eclipse will then become total from 1.11am until 2.23 am." Well, thanks a lot. I'll start reading the Daily Mail instead.
